What Winter tires?

Which winter tires is better for Toronto area type of road conditions on a 335i with MSport package?

Dunlop Sport 3D
Bridgestone Blizzak LM25
Hankook W409

run-flat or no?

also, will 17" be better in the snow or 18"?

Not sure how Msport will have an affect on snow conditions but...

Both the blizzacks and dunlops are the preferred performance winter tire around here. I run 225/40/18 LM25s and they do pretty well in decent snow if you're easy on the throttle. 17's will do marginally better.

I ran XIce-2 last winter and they were great (328 though). Even drive in old city of Toronto with unplowed streets, hills, etc... and never failed me once. Out of your list I would suggest LM25 (coworker has the dunlops on 335 and didn't like them, no experience with the hankooks).

Bought mine at tires23 last year for a reasonable price.

I had pirelli wintersport 210 which was great! I am thinking of pirelli wintersport 240 for my 09 335i.

i don't like my dunlop 3d's. i think i'm in the minority. just don't think they have as much snow grip as others. i guess they are better in low temp dry grip, but at the expense of snow/ice grip.

parents had some unknown (to me) brand of snow tires from Steelcase and i felt those were so much more grippy in packed snow than my 3d's.

i'd go with the blizzaks if i were you...

ya in very deep snow they're so so I agree.... advantage of 3d's is that they will not wear off fast

i think for deep snow its better to get studless and ice onces instead of performance winters. Tire rack shows x-ice 2 is the best with the studless ones.

What about the 17" versus the 18" wheel size? Will 17" be significantly better in the snow than the 18".

Like I said, marginally better. The width of the tire is what is going to make the biggest difference as a narrower tire will have a smaller 'footprint'. Go 225 all around and put some 12-15mm spacers in the rear for a decent look.

As some of the others said, both the 3D's and LM25's are performance winter tires. Meaning they're going to do very well in dry cold conditions and light to moderate snow. Clearance aside, I have found in snowfalls beyond 10cm the car struggles in many situations. Patience in a virtue.. as is a light foot.

For winter traction, it's the tread width that matters: 255 is not as effective as 225 or 215.

The other major advantage for 17" rims vs. 18" is the added rubber sidewall protection against pothole damage.

I am thinking of ordering the 18" Moda MD5 rims with the Blizzak LM25 tires in 225-40-18..
The quoted price is around $1500 USD.

Fair price??? Good winter setup?

or go with the 17" Rial Salerno's with the LM25 in 225-40-17...

???

Blizzaks for better grip.
I had a set of Blizzak MZ-01's for 9 seasons and I loved the traction and confidence they gave me. The treads on the WS-60's look just like the the MZ's.

One snowy morning on the drive to work there were cars and a semi-trailer that attempted to climb a hill and got stuck on the roadside. Me, I just blew past them and climbed all the way up.
