Should I buy a 2014+ Range Rover Sport?
Now that the 2nd generation Range Rover, with the aluminum chassis and super charged engines are more than 5 years old, prices are around Mid 30s. I'm wondering if anyone here has/had one and can share their experience with them (2014-17) I'm leaning towards grabbing a v6 one for daily driving (I'm keeping my e90 m3, so I'll already have a V8). I've been driving the m3 daily (6mt at that) with two small children in the back in the city everyday. It is exhausting specially since mine is modded. I always wanted an RR Sport but never had driven one and stayed away because of the reliability issues. But I drove one recently and was just amazed at the comfort and simplicity of the luxury interior... obviously I'd get extended warranty or cpo...Thanks

Personally, I'd stay away from any Jag/RR products, but that is because I don't trust them.
Check out Doug Demuro's video on his CarMax Warranty regarding his used Range Rover. Even with a warranty it still isn't fun to have to deal with the work and have the car inconvenience your schedule with trips to the dealer and then getting stuck in a less superior loaner. But in the end YMMV. |

We have an 2010 LR4 with the 5.0 liter HSE with all the options.
It had its issues with the timing chain guides. Well known and documented. All fixed. We have put a water pump, belts and tensioner and crossover pipe on it and front air struts. These are the only things we have done outside of normal maintenance. I do have a seam in one of the seats that needs to be restitched but no real wear on the leather. My son and I do all the maintenance but I did farm out the chain tensioners as it is a big job with specialty tools. It is the HSC with every option on it. Bought it with around 120000 and now is near 180000. Runs great. Everything works. Going to run out and knock on the gorgeous wood trim for good luck right now and maybe sit in the connelly leather. I guess I got lucky? I'd buy another.

Huge fan of LR4s (never driven one though) but was looking at a 2012 LR4 (best year to get before they switched to 6) and decided to go with Lexus GX470 for reliability reasons. Recently bought a 2019 left over GX460 and for the money I don't think it offers the amenities that a vehicle with a sticker of $58k should. If I had to do it again I would go for something a little more luxurious such as kia Telluride or LR4 on a used market.

I don't have ownership experience but found myself in the same boat about a year ago. Drove a RRS with the V6 and it is a special vehicle to drive. Quick steering, comfortable, reasonably sporty, good interior room. I must have done 20-30 hours reading message boards, reviews, and talking to folks I know that have them. There are a few folks that have had excellent experience but there are others that have had their car in the shop for 35 days within the first year of ownership. My opinion: If you have a RR dealer close by that has a good reputation and you don't mind the hassle of it being in the shop -- all while under some variety of a warranty which should include a loaner vehicle -- then go for it. Their CPO warranty is pretty darn good. I didn't pull the trigger on a RRS because the closest dealers are about an hour away. Would have been too much hassle if I wasn't one of the lucky ones that got the RRS with excellent reliability.

We have an 18 RR, no real issues, some software glitches here and there but nothing that I would take it in for. I had a 2010 rr at one point and an 06 rrs. None of the cars had any more issues than our bmw's had.
The main difference is that the BMW dealership here is much bigger, when something goes wrong you can get in right away and they will get it fixed quickly. The RR dealership is small, it can take days before they are even able to look at the vehicle. |

NO. Ditto to all the problems already mentioned by everyone. Also, it doesn't have a split rear hatch like a proper Range Rover (similar to the X5)

I like to look at them but I would never own one. My 2010 Volvo XC60 was built with some rover parts, specifically the rear differential, and it went out around 70,000 miles and $5k or so out of pocket.

Thanks everyone for your input. I have read tons about these cars myself and definitely a lot of horror stories but also the consensus appears to be that the new aluminum body styles have improved ton. I have few dealers around including one 30 mins away so I decided to go for some test drives. I ended up driving two of them, a 2014 black one that had 70k miles (HSE model w/ Meridian sound system), price is 29k and a 2014 gray one with only 40k miles but it was the SE base model w/ base sound system, price around 35k I believe. First impression was great. I loved the seating position and loved the meridian sound system (the base car and base sound system sucked bad). The ride was smooth, the 6 cylinder felt enough (and I definitely don't need another v8 right now). What I was most impressed with was how luxurious and functional everything felt. It was obvious to me that they wanted the driver to feel like in a "cockpit" setting, specially having those functional arm rest on both sides where I could lay my elbows. I also sat in a fully loaded 1 owner, 2016 Black one that had only 18k miles and wow, it was Mint! They wanted 43k for this one. My budget was around 30-35k, but it looks like I may need to go 35k-40k for good one. I'll keep you posted... I'm in a middle of a home renovation that likely will last for another couple months but will likely pull the trigger one soon after. Thanks again for all the input....

Literally every single option box was checked. Ipanema Sand Paint, Locking diffs, Meridian sound. Never known anything else within LR4 world so not sure what I'd miss. It is extremely comfortable, Extremely capable, Sounds good. It does not "handle". It is tall and heavy. But it has plenty of power and massive brakes. But it will go ANYWHERE I would ever desire to go. Heavy is an understatement. Whenever I work on the truck I am astonished at the "overbuilt" nature of the truck. Control arms, skid plates, etc are just so massive. I was fearful of the truck in the beginning but we paid very little for it (knowing it likely needed chain tensioners at $3500-4500). But this was in the Ford era and the trucks I think are as reliable as Fords during this era. They have a huge enthusiast base and knowledge is available on the forums for almost anything. https://www.landroverworld.org/forums/lr4.84/ The represent a huge value due to the massive depreciation they experience... That being said my 2018 Platinum F150 is just as nice inside, leather isn't quite as nice (LR4 is Connoly). Doesn't ride as nice since it is usually an unloaded pickup. But very nice vehicle. Much more high tech with radar cruise, lane keeping, bluetooth, apple and android integration. If you haven't driven a king ranch or platinum F150 you should. V8 or eco boost 3.5 are both great motors. I would have bought either. Very happy with my 3.5 Ecoboost and 10 speed transmission. It also has every single option on it except Max tow. So I am limited to about 11000 instead of 13000 pounds.

I have found the stories about RR reliability to be greatly exaggerated on anything built after '05 or so. I have an '06 LR3 with 130k and the only expense I've incurred other than maintenance is a $500 alternator (very recently). I did replace the air compressor but it was only a few hundred dollars--I'll call that maintenance since it's a common item on any air-suspended vehicle and anything with a normal suspension would have had to have been completely replaced by this point in ownership.
It's especially hilarious to see people in a BMW forum knocking Land Rovers. I would trust my LR3 to drive across the country over my old E70 or current F25. Both of my BMW SUVs have been completely unreliable and required greater than $25k in repairs EACH while accruing less than 25k miles EACH. Quote:
Any vehicle in this class is going to have similar rates if you take it to the dealer with out of warranty repairs.

Regarding independent mechanics, while we enthusiasts may use them, most of the general public will use dealers, thus the costs in the video reflect what most regular owners would pay if those things were to break. You can get lucky with a RR, its just the general consensus and proven data that when it comes to reliability, RR and Jag are typically towards the lower end, but as always YMMV, just personally from those I know, and some brief stints in one for myself, I personally am just not a fan of them. |

How Can anyone say there reliability is over exaggerated. Do some research and any person can tell you that they are HORRIBLY unreliable. They consistently rank at the bottom of the list ranking them against every car brand. They are an over priced money/status symbol that has a lot of features that can be had with many other car brands with better reliability. The reason they are still in business is because its a status symbol. 95% of every range rover is a luxury SUV that will never get used in a manner thats its capable of or what it was designed to do. Personally I have 2 friends that have leased land rovers in the last 5 years. Both people filed claims due to being broken in the shops multiple times in the first 3 months after driving a brand new car off the lot. Personally I would stay away. There track record has never been good warranty or not. Its still the frustration of having a broken car.

JD Power Associates Long Term Dependability ranking (i.e., cars three years in service) has Land Rover next to dead last just ahead of Fiat. LOL.
Rover has NEVER been remotely close to the industry average in terms of reliability. You can buy them cheap because they will cost you a fortune to maintain and repair. You think German makes are bad? Just wait. |

Why not an X-series? We love being a "BMW family" and have had quite a few, current garage is an M5 and an X5...best of both worlds in my opinion :-) (Oh crap, didn't see the forum I was posting in, please disregard my BMW suggestion)
