WhatsApp messages in iDrive now possible! (only Android)

Hey everyone!

I recently retrofitted Combox in my 335i E92 '09. I really liked the feature to read my SMS, but it wasn't very useful for me because 99% I only text over WhatsApp. I searched for hours for a solution, but didn't find any (on Android).

Then I had an idea how to implement this. So I went to a friend, and we developed our app "SMS Notification Forwarder", which implements my idea. Conclusion: It works

First version of our app was just uploaded to the PlayStore and should be online in a few hours/days. The price of the app is about 5$.

How it works:
- it's a open-source SMS/MMS-app, which we use to add our features.
- the app has implemented an notification-listener, which catches WhatsApp-notifications and saves them to SMS database. Those are readable then from iDrive (and in every car/device which supports Bluetooth-MAP-profile).
- the app has to be the default SMS/MMS-client, and Notification-access has to be enabled for it to work (Android restriction).
- it only works on Android from 5.0 (iOS-development is not planned yet)
- it *doesn't* need root-access or similar
- there isn't any configurable options right now, the feature is enabled by default

The app is only working, if you already can read SMS in iDrive (so Combox is installed). This is a requirement!

Coming up:
- smiley-parser
- auto SMS-delete
- support for other apps

Like I already told, it's the first version, so there will be bugs. But we're continously improving the app.

We're open to inputs or new ideas

EDIT: App is now online: PlayStore

Hello,

the App does not seem to be in the PlayStore anymore... has it been banned?

Is there any other way I can get it? Can you send it to me? Of course I would pay (or help with the development ).

Hi guys!

My App is now available again on PlayStore:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...roid.forwarder

If you already purchased the app, just send me an email with your Google Play receipt, and I'll send you a code to download the app for free.

Thanks

Is this app still being developed because it doesn't seem to have moved on very much, or are there any alternatives? It's seems we've finally cracked sms to iDrive just as everyone jumps ship to WhatsApp, I certainly receive at least 10 WhatsApp messages for every sms, so not being able to view or answer then is a pita.

I'm also an android developer. I'd be interested in helping with this. You said it was based on open source code? What license is it under? Do you have an obligation to publish your source code changes up stream? If so can I please have it?

I'm interested to know if this could be extended to support any or every notification type on android.

I don't use whats app, but what I would like is for any notification on my device to get forwarded to the sms db. A stretch goal would be the ability to toggle which app's notifications get forwarded.

I think this would be very handy.

Sorry to revive this old thread.

I stopped development on my app. I found another developer who made the same functionality and even more in his app, and we merged the functionality of my app into his. The app supports notifications from every app and is free.

Hey there!

Congratulations on the successful retrofit of Combox in your 335i E92 '09! It's great to hear about your innovative solution to integrate WhatsApp notifications with the SMS feature in your car's system.

Your "SMS Notification Forwarder" app sounds like a fantastic addition for those who primarily communicate through WhatsApp but still want the convenience of accessing messages through their car's interface. The fact that it doesn't require root access and is compatible with Android 5.0 and above makes it accessible to a wide range of users.

The features you've mentioned for the app's upcoming versions, such as smiley parsing, auto SMS-delete, and support for other apps, sound promising and will likely enhance its functionality even further.

As with any new app, bugs are expected, but the fact that you're committed to continuously improving it speaks volumes about your dedication to providing a top-notch user experience.

I'm sure many users will appreciate your app's convenience and innovative approach. Best of luck with its launch, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it evolves based on user feedback and new ideas.
