Let’s be honest, it’s just an engineering failure in terms of reliability, but there’s no reason it had to be. We’d have more engines like that if it weren’t for fuel economy and emissions.

I am also one that wonders how the 1M made the list but no F87 M2s. I would take my M2 over a 1M every day of the week.

Gents, I went to a half mile airstrip event in SoCal a couple weeks ago. Around 130 cars signed up and half were BMW's which was a bit of a surprise. But what was actually rather shocking was the number of v10 M5's. They were the most represented BMW at the event. Must have been 7 or 8 of them. All sounding amazing howling down the airstrip.

Great video, but I have a hard time believing you can tribute M history without the F87 and either of the F80/F82.

I'm probably biased though..lol

Because NA rules supreme over forced induction, sounds better and provides a more organic driving experience. Not to mention these modern M cars with BMW 's lackluster steering engagement. All the cars prior to EPS were more engaging to drive. Sure, they were slower but as most of us know, speed isn't everything.

Chris harris would say otherwise about the F80/F82 platform. He had an F80 back in the day and currently has the M2Cs.

I had an E46 M3, 330iZHP, Dinan Stage 3 135i and now M2 CS (among many other less notable BMWs). The steering feel on the CS is on par with all of them and the handling is superior by a wide margin. Well, the 135i was set up for the track, but on the roads the CS is much more livable and it's easier to drive at 9/10s.

I'm not hating on the earlier BMWs, they are great and the new M cars are getting too heavy, but the M2 is not significantly heavier than the E46 M3.

They should have at least had an M2C, but I appreciate the effort here.

Oh and none of my BMWs have sounded particularly good, and the E46 M3 probably sounded the worst. Subjective, perhaps, but it's probably the weakest point in my favorite brand of cars.

Guess I just have to keep tracking and putting miles on my M4 GTS since it's not "the best BMW M cars"

I bought my favourite several years ago and will be keeping it indefinitely. Long live M and long live the 1M!

The steering on the 1M is edgy as he says but that's what makes it so much fun. It's always alive, a bit twitchy but so so enjoyable! Long live tight hydraulic steering too!

After daily driving it for 8 years and putting a LOT of miles on it—he is right the 1M is a total lunatic. Just the other day I loosened the rear end out a bit just trying to pass someone on a 2 way road. But it is endlessly exciting and never fails to put a massive smile on my face.

I couldn't agree more with you. I too had more than half of the car shown in the video and current an M2C. Looks, sound, handling, speed everything is better in the M2. Of course subjective but that's my opinion from having and living with almost every variant of m3s.

No F87s. Must be produced by someone who never drive an F87 in any form.

The NA stuff was just better in terms of driving enjoyment. But the modern turbo M cars are better daily drivers, more reliable, cheaper to maintain, more efficient, and much faster. i've owned an e36, e46, f80, and driven a f10, f87comp, e92, z3m coupe.

To me peak M was s85/s65 era.

You can make an e92 handle, ride, and brake well. can't upgrade an f80/g80 to make it feel like a hydraulic rack or sound good no matter how much money you throw at it. On the flip side I would definitely not recommend a s65/s85 for a commuter and it being your only car. these are second or third cars you just take out for fun.

What really frosts my gonads about the crappy EPS is that BMW has had 19 years - 19 YEARS! - to figure it out. Pretty sure the first EPS car was the 2003 Z4. All these years later, they still can't get it right? The M division refused to allow EPS on the E85/E86 Z4M. Wise decision. Of course that didn't last long and soon M cars were infected with it too.
