N52 3IM BPC Tune First Impressions
After some brief confusion over a missing email, I flashed my BPC tune late this morning and drove 25 or so miles to see what's up.
Ladies and gentlemen, the butt dyno is very pleased. The car is stronger all over the rev range. Sixth gear is particularly improved on the highway as it seems to have a lot more passing power. I did a brief zero to 145ish run (just to make sure the speed limiter was removed, of course ![]() Lower end power does seem improved as well, but I spent more time on the highway than on surface streets just now. The power gains above 3000 RPM are very apparent. I've noticed the motor revs more quickly in neutral which is nice. I match revs more often than not so I'm going to have to learn not to kick the gas as hard. I'm glad I did this. BPC Customer Service has been great.

I had the tune too about a month ago, it seems like the more I drive the car the stronger the car pulls (after some theoretical adaptation). But great deal man, glad for you!

My car has an N52. I was coming from a 330i flash and the power increase was fun. I don't know much about the power increases for an N51 car given the lower compression ratio. Might be a good question to ask BPC.

I posted my dynos on another thread a few months ago. The N51 is like a neutered N52 330i until a few mods and a tune.

I remember you talking about it, but I don’t remember the actual dynos. Automatic N51 with 91 octane. 25whp gain from stock. You need MILVs. |

I see no reason why the BPC tune wouldn't do *almost* just as much for a SULEV 328i (N51 w/ 3IM) as it does for a 330i (N52 w/ 3IM) or a standard ULEV 328i with the 3IM upgrade (N52 + 3IM). The slightly lower compression ratio probably robs the tuned N51 of about 5 maybe 10 whp max, based upon my rough calculations, when compared to a tuned N52 with the same mods (3IM, intake, MILVS, headers, exhaust, etc.).
That said, only those at BPC really know what the difference in their N51 vs. N52 tunes are. Last edited by atmosphericM; 07-02-2018 at 12:42 PM. |

Oh yeah 213 whp is low for sure but as you said, octane and auto. Could be the dyno, as well. I did 208 whp on a Mustang dyno with only one mod (silicone intake boot).. but that doesn't mean much, really. My baseline was 200-202 whp.

Depends on the Mustang dyno. Some can be made to read closer to a dynojet, others like Active Autowerks, read about 8% lower.

yeah, people complain that dynojets 'read high' but the important thing is you can't easily mess with the calibration if you're using SAE, so it's easier to compare them to other dynojet runs. In Australia they mainly use DynoDynamics which when used with 'Shootout-6' calibration is pretty similar to SAE (and can't easily be fudged).
Every time I've had a 'stock' car on a Dynojet the expected WHP is pretty damn close to reality. At least we don't have it as bad as europe where every dyo reports BHP (even though it's measured at the wheels) and some mixture of either KW/NM or PS/NM (KW/NM makes sense, but what's the point of PS/NM?). So everyone here who doesn't know better sees a euro dyno chart and thinks somehow they are making like 25% more horsepower, but they really aren't. At the end of the day it's really a tool meant to tune an engine, yes it can be used to measure output but that's not the point - it's like using a torque wrench to determine the strength of a bolt. It can tell you any number you want depending on how you set it up, and each tool varies a little bit. |

Nice! I love mine, albeit I have a custom Bimmerlabs tune. At this point with the free "stock 330i tune," not doing a 3SM on a 328 is inexcusable lol.
