Woke up early this morning to wash my baby for the first time in 3 1/2 weeks. Started at 6:30AM so to miss the hot part of the day which makes drying a pain. Ended up taking me 2 hours for the total wash and dry. But I still have to go out and clean all of the windows with Sprayway and dress the tires with TireWet. I might spritz the entire car with Z6 too later tonight, but I'm not sure as that takes me about an hour to do one coat of Z6 and one coat of Z8 on the entire car---lots of standing up and down throughout doing all of the panels.

When I try using Z8, it seems to leave streaks or dots from the spray behind unless I buff it a LOT. A huge pain. Is this because I'm trying to apply it in the sun? Does it work better when it's colder / more overcast out?

No, Has nothing to do with the sun. Ziano is an Oil based wax so it will leave streaks and wet spots ect. Ziano is a kick ass wax but ive found my own combination that works even better when with ziano. Adams Car Polishes. First off the soap is PH Neutral so you can wash the car in the hot sun and you will not get any water spots. Seriously NONE. Adams is a water based wax and not oil. Will not streak or anything. Not only their soap but their detail spray too!. Zaino wax by far is the best but using that with adams is incredible! I love their VRT polish to. You can use it to bring vynl rubber and trim on the car back to life and you dont have to worry about getting it on the windows or paint or rims. Its also water based and just wipes right off. Those ziano lovers should try my combo. Your car will look imaculate. BMWExec....You should try it. You seem to be a clean freak like me lol Our E90's should always be spotless.

Zaino is not an oil based wax. In fact, Zaino is not a wax at all. I am not defending Zaino, just correcting misinformation. It is a safe assumption that being a wax at all, Adams has more petroleum based products in it than Zaino.

Take a bottle of Z8, balance it ontop of your car, shoot the bottle open with a BB gun (thereby letting the soap explode all over the car), blast it with a fire hose connected up to a water hydrant at 2,000PSI and grab a turbocharged 410MPH leaf blower to dry it?

I set a record this week, only taking an hour to wash and dry the car, because I had very limited time. I didn't dress the tires or follow with QD, though. I guess I'm slow. The first few times, I took like 2 hrs to wash and dry. I normally take about 1.5 hours now.

45 minutes, having 2 people at the dealer do it for me every week. Followed by my 1-hour sealing and optionally waxing, 15 minutes leather cleaning and conditioning, 15 minutes non-leather interior cleaning and protecting.

So i heard ziano is a sealant, not a wax. What is sealant anyway? does it make the car shine like wax?

I am going to wash my car for the first time since I got it before thanksgiving - since I got teflon protection (5 yr warranty) I am just going to take it easy , wash it with tutle-wax shampoo and clean the brake dust off the wheels + tires with eagle 1 cleaner. Afterwards put eagle 1 tire shine and then I am done! I'll post some pictures afterwards...

Zaino has no wax. Again, Zaino is not a wax, there is no Zaino product that is a wax or contains any wax.

What is a sealant... ok, I'll get to that right after I reply to the second part. Does it make the car shine like wax? Yes, it does add gloss, wetness, and luster like wax. Some people prefer the look of wax, some prefer the look of sealant, most don't care since with proper prep they look the same (as in, good). Before I go on I want everyone to read that twice.. with proper preparation, the sealant or wax you use will make almost no difference towards the overall appearance of the car. OK? Cool.

So, what's the difference between a sealant and a wax? Well, both serve the exact same purpose; to protect your cars paint from UV rays, acid rain, rail dust, bird crap, salt corrosion, etc... at the same time both are designed to help enhance the appearance of paint; they both just do it differently. Waxes, as we know, have been around awhile and contain, well, wax. Some have carnauba, some have bees wax, some have paraffin, some have white carnauba, some have yellow carnauba, some have more carnauba than others. They all have oils and solvents which act as a carrier for the wax and burn off after application, leaving the wax as a protective layer. Wax "sits" on top of the surface of the paint and acts as a sacraficial layer between the paint and the world. Waxes last between 1 week and 6 months, with most lasting between 3-6 weeks. It takes a serious wax to last longer than 6 weeks, and there are only a few. The downsides to these are they either a) don't leave as nice a "shine" as the "beauty" waxes *or* b) they do leave a great shine and last a long time, but are really, really expensive (see, Zymol Royale). Carnauba itself is rock solid in nature, so as I mentioned oils, petroleum distillates, naptha (emulsifier) are all added to make it softer and aid application. Most waxes contain between 1-10% actual carnauba, some contain a lot more but are $$$$$ (Royale is 61% iirc, and is $7k a jar). In terms of looks carnaubas add more distortion, and add a depth and "glow" that people lust after.

Sealants are usually polymer based and are completely synthetic; so for now, while this is totally wrong, think of them like synthetic waxes (they aren't actually synthetic waxes, synthetic waxes are, well, waxes...). They are essentially made of millions of little polymers that adhere to the surface of the paint (bond), and form a protective shell. They are almost all optically clear, which means they tend to look "plasticky", very wet, but not deep. The upside, they last between 4-6 months, *easily* and are almost always a breeze to apply and remove. (FWIW, there isn't a single sealant that will last 5 years, so folks who get the "5 year dealer sealant" should read the warranty; it will mention re-application).

Now I've generalized, some sealants try to mimic the "wax" look, etc... but in terms of amateur detailing think of wax and sealants as two different products that are intended to do the same thing, protect the paint. Which you use depends on how you will use your car, your level of interest in re-application, etc.

But remember, THE SEALANT AND WAX MAKE ALMOST NO DIFFERENCE IN THE APPEARANCE - what *will* enhance your appearance is proper prep. Putting Zaino on a contaminated and scratched up dull finish will do *nothing* for it, nor will any sealant or wax. If you really want to enhance the look of your paint research claying, compounding, polishing, etc.
