Talking Baseline Dyno and more for MY2012 335is DCT

Hi Everyone,

After ~4 months and 3500miles of ownership, I felt it was an appropriate time to gather some baseline dyno data on my completely stock MY2012 335is N54/DCT.

I wanted to gather as much data as I possibly could, so feel free to read on if you'd like!

I took my car to ESP in Sterling, MA, because I've been visiting them for years and have hosted several dyno days there. ESP has a Mustang 1100-SE AWD Chassis Dyno.

Some pictures of my car on the dyno:

Dyno Details:
Ambient temperature was 75degrees F with 80% humidity.

The Mustang Dyno requires us to input vehicle weight (I used 3600pounds) and HP @ 50MPH (I used 11.10 per an EPA PDF document they had).

We hooked up a wideband AFR/Lambda probe on the right side tailpipe. We did not measure boost as I didn't think it was relevant for my baseline.

All dyno runs were in Sport gearbox mode, Sport button depressed, 4th Gear (M4), with DSC completely off. I use 93 octane (10% ethanol) Shell V-Power fuel.

Initially, I wanted to measure from 2500-7000RPM. We did two baseline runs, and during both of these, the car upshifted to 5th gear at 6800RPM, skewing the dyno results. On the third baseline run, we changed the RPM measurement range from 2500-6500RPM to prevent the upshift from skewing the results (referred to as "baseline run" going forward).

With the Weather Correction Factor (WCF), the baseline run achieved 283WHP @5900RPM, and 302ft/lb WTQ at 3000RPM. See below.

Baseline Run Chart with Torque and HP in the Y-Axis.

Baseline Run Chart with Torque and AFR in the Y-Axis.

In the interest of eliminating as many variables as possible for a fair "before" and "after" dyno comparison, I decided to install a new CF intake system with the car still strapped on the dyno! After about 40 minutes, voila:

CF Intake System Installed:

We then performed two more pulls on the dyno with the new intake system. Both these pulls had nearly identical HP/TQ and graph shapes. Mind you, these were technically the fourth and fifth pulls (see above about the first two "duds"), so the car was starting to get heat soaked a bit (note the lower AFR readings below).

With the Weather Correction Factor (WCF), the more rich "CF Intake" run achieved 289WHP @5900RPM, and 312ft/lb WTQ at 3000RPM. See below.

Chart with Torque and HP in the Y-Axis.

Chart with Torque and AFR in the Y-Axis.

While the peak Torque figure (312 versus 302) improved more than the peak HP figure (289 versus 283), the improvement of total area under the curve was what surprised me. Clearly the intake system we installed had a measurable and noticeable gain over the stock intake system. See below:

Stock versus Upgraded Intake Dyno Runs:

I'll be uploading a video of my dyno run later this week as well!

Any questions or comments, please let me know.

There are couple of things wrong with those dyno runs

Air efficiency was not set up correctly. One fan should have been directed to the Intercooler, and the other should have been aimed directly to the kidney grills to force feed the intake mouth to be close as possible to real world conditions.

Your car was being ran into high RPMs with no pressure at the intake mouth. I wouldnt be surpised that your DME started pulling timing

On your dyno run, what do you mean that Sport Button was depressed ? Was the Sport Button enabled or disabled during the dyno ? If the sport button was not "enabled" you were not getting overboost by the looks of those numbers.

Also, from the looks of the dyno graph the person runing the car was hesitant on the throttle as your tourque should be much smoother than that. His foot should have been a bit more consistent in going down of the peddle just before the kick down

With all due respect to the tuner I dont think he had much experience with an N54 DCT. There is alot of errors in that dyno.

When i dyno my car I request that xyz should be a certain way, your the paying customer.

Thanks for the feedback. I too noticed this after the first baseline run, but in the interest of not adding another variable in the before/after dyno runs, I didn't want to change the fan setup and give the CF intake any additional benefit.

With that said, I've come to accept that all the dynos within 500 mile radius of me don't have any fans which can replicate the air CFM's the car will experience while on the road.

The only dyno that I am aware of that can, is the MAHA LPS 3000, which has an air fan accessory which can be purchased along with the dyno. It is a beast of a fan, looking like this:

The closest MAHA dyno I am aware of is in LA...

When I said it was depressed, I meant it was enabled.

You may certainly have a point, as this was their first N54 on the dyno, let alone N54 DCT. Either way I will accept the overall results considering it is a Mustang dyno, and the CF intake did show improvements.

Nice I've been considering it since it's a really nice looking piece (really cleans up the engine bay), but wasn't sure how it would compare to a standard DCI efficiency wise (from looking at the WGDC)

Mind logging & getting some data?

I have no way of logging WGDC data at this time, what do you recommend I use?

Also, how would WGDC help measure the air intake's efficiency? Wouldn't inlet temp and post filter pressure measurements be a more effective method?

Completely agree with this ahah.

And, I too think the car didn't go into over post because those torque numbers seem kinda low for a 335is.
Either way, Gj with showing intake gains!

Did you allow the gas pedal to go past the click/kick-down mode during the dyno run? What RPM's did you achieve those figures at?

I've never seen any dyno operator use the tow bolts to strap down the car. The chassis seems more secure to me, as well.

UPDATE:
For anyone who's interested, I will be dynoing the car again in a few weeks on the same dyno. Upgrade will include 3" catless DP's, FMIC and Cobb AP. This way we can accurately compare the baseline dyno results with the new results.

If they will not let you run the test yourself make a block to keep the car out of kick down at WOT. It will screw the test up if you can't get 100% throttle at WOT without hitting kick down.

I think with a normal spread between a Mustang (lower) & Dynojet (higher) you have more power to be had for your baseline. I would be looking for 295whp peak & 340ftlb starting at 3K RPM.
