Gearbox fault code 4F83 E92 335d

Had a problem with gearbox warning couple of weeks ago which cleared itself, came back again last night and whilst it has cleared again i took it to someone with autologic and the car is showing fault code:

4F83 ratio monitoring clutch c

anybody got any idea as to what this means or if it means a big job?

car is still in warranty thank christ!

Assumed any work on the auto box would be quite steep, thank god it's still in warranty.

It happened again last night and always seems to have around 4000 rpm above 70mph. Driving around town and steady driving is normal and car performs as it always has.

Going on previous experiences with the dealers I am sure they will wipe the code and say there is no problem and give me the same old crap that it's just the way it is, don't think il be accepting that one!

Odd fault code - it doesnt have a clutch, its a torque convertor auto.

If its in warranty though why take it to an indy, when its covered by BMW?

I took it to the Indy as he is only a 2 min drive from my house where s the garage is half hour, plus he is a BMW master tech and an extremely knowledgeable bloke. When I had the issue initially the dealers said I didn't need to bring it in as the error message had gone from the check control so there wouldn't be a problem with my car.

They will be looking over it on Tuesday, just hope they sort it mechanically and don't try to fob me off with a software upgrade.

The Indy guy told me it indicates that one of clutch packs on the auto box is probably failing. Font know what they are but it sounds expensive!!

It will be, for sure so get it into a dealer for warranty repairs. There are no components inside the ZF6HP unit that are dealer-serviceable. A dealer will only fit a factory (ZF) unit in cases such as this.

I hope for gods sake you have a decent warranty.

it has 8 months of the original manufacturers warranty left on it so i hope that should cover it.

I was wondering whether or not they would be able to fix it themselves or if would be something as drastic as a new gear box?

I know this is resurrecting an old thread but jonl - how did this work out? Did you need a gear box replacement? I got this code after a fluid change, hasn't come back yet but it's with my indy today
