Third-party warranties!
Hey guys, recently purchased a warranty through Warrantech called CustomEdge Ultimate. Sounded like a really good idea when I was purchasing my car ($2955 for 3yrs/36,000 miles with a $250 deductible for bumper to bumper protection) but now that I'm snooping around the internet regarding experiences with the company I'm having a bit of a dilemma.
I think its fair to say that most of the time people use the internet to speak about negative experiences as opposed to when they receive positive ones but some of the things I'm reading are freaking me out. I searched the forums and saw a few posters mention they have it and even some that said they were pushing through with a claim but then they never followed up with the outcome of said claim. Anyone have first-hand experiences with them that they'd be willing to share? If anyone's wondering heres a list of whats covered and whats excluded in the warranty: https://warrantech.com/partners/auto...ts/customedge/ I do have a 60 day window to get a full refund on the policy. I'm keeping an eye on Route 66 as an alternative. Anyone have any advice on getting a policy in Houston, TX? Thanks in advance!

I'm having the same issue as you.. I have a 2011 335is as well with 30k miles.. I got quoted 2800 for 3 years..70k miles.. And that was from a BMW dealer.. Why didn't you just use a BMW dealer? 3000 seems too much for third party.. I still didn't purchase one yet tho.. Have about 6 months until factory expires

1. I was the original owner of the car 2. The car was sold to me as a CPO I bought the car used from a non-BWM dealership, hence my dilemma. However, the carfax states that the car was sold as a CPO to the previous owner, about 15k miles ago. Giving my local BMW dealership a call to see if theres any way I can obtain a warranty or if CPO warranty from the last owner can be transferred given my situation.

You can only purchase a extended warranty through BMW IF you are still in your factory warranty.. I might not just get any warranty.. Planning on keeping until 60-70k miles.. I don't think anything really should go wrong ( crossing my fingers ) money isn't a issue I can afford to purchase one.. But is it really worth 3k? Peace of mind is all it really is.. That's why I'm considering.. |

Not that hard a question. Given that the car has probably gone through its initial warranty adjustments, do you think you will spend more than the "warranty" costs in covered repairs over the next three years?
And remember, every time you use that "warranty" (actually an insurance policy) you're out of pocket $250 before any coverage kicks in. If you use it twice, it will cost you an additional $500 for those uses. In such a case, I would buy that kind of warranty only if I had signs that some major system of the car had problems and I anticipated having to have expensive work done within the warranty period. Otherwise, just drive it, do the oil changes and maintenance, and simply pay for any needed repairs. Better yet, learn to DIY and take care of your own brake jobs and other minior maintenance. |

I have Alpha warranty. 5yr/100k on top of when I bought it, covers everything except wear and tear (shocks, clutch, etc) paid just a hair over 2k. But that was only a touch above dealers cost.

I live in SoCal and purchase the Hendrick Automotive extended warranty for my 2010 335i. I chose the Platinum 3yr/30k mile warranty for about $1300 with a $50 deductible. Two months after purchasing this I got all 6 injectors replaced which was a $2300 job (warranty paid for already lol). I've had other small things replaced as well with no issues.

I purchased a Lubrico one on the advice of a well known local indy shop who deals with them all the time,
I would call your fav local indy shop and ask which one they recommend and get that one...they will be the ones doing the leg work most of the time getting shit appvd from the underwriter so best to ask them who has the simplest process |

I also read too many negative experiences about my 3rd party warranty which is GWC, esp on pissed off consumers .com or something like that. Other than the comments, I had alright experiences with them so far. Had the whole transfer case done and getting the o2 sensors replaced tomorrow all covered 100%. I just upgraded to the essential pkg for more options

Third party warranties are profitable because they deny so many claims. Never ever get a third party warranty. Unless your car is literally following the factory maintenance schedule to the T, you're only using BMW parts, and you save every single receipt of anything you've ever done to the car at a reputable dealer or independent shop, they will find a way to deny your claim.
That's exactly what the business is: provide an attractive looking policy that looks fantastic in an advertisement, but load it full of so many disqualifiers that you'd need to run a bone stock perfect car to get any claim paid for you in full. They run on a similar principle to the rebate business. Rebate companies pride themselves on showing how many claims they deny, or don't get fulfilled in the overall run of the product. They make those difficult to obtain for a good reason. The rebate looks awesome! You can get 10 bucks back if you do some set of instructions! That's so much better than the product above it, which doesn't give me 10 dollars! More people buy the product, and most forget about the rebate, some fulfill it, and then some percentage of those that actually did send it in get denied because they forgot to sign something, include the UPC, or some other technicality that didn't meet all the designed-to-be-complicated rules. And what happens to the companies that pay out too many claims, because they calculated their expected value way wrong? They go under, you lose your warranty, and you lose your money. It happens all the time. Third party warranty companies pop up and disappear regularly. If I were you, I would get a refund and buy a toolbox instead. Warranties not backed by the manufacturer of the vehicle are always a gamble designed for you to lose. Last edited by Welcome to NBA Jam; 02-25-2015 at 09:46 PM.. |

Welp, after a quick phone call to BMWUSA, found out my car is covered by a CPO warranty until the end of 2016/100k miles courtesy of the previous owner. Gonna be getting a full refund in the next week or so. Thanks for all the great advice guys! This will def be an easy decision to make in the future.

I got the BMW 6/100,000 Gold Extended Warranty for $2250. So far I've had the OFHG done, some serious electrical work (although it didn't cover a dead battery that I surmise resulted from the electrical issues), and new rotors.

The more I read of what others paid for their extended warranties, the more I realize I got a really good deal.

Thats what I thought as well. However, that policy change only applies to cars sold as CPO after the January 1, 2014 date. Cars sold as CPO before that date are grandfathered into the old policy, which is the CPO warranty travels with the car regardless of changes in ownership. Hope this helps prospective buyers! Check those Carfaxes!
