Grabbed a few hours and worked on the rear bumper (these modern shapes are a RIGHT pain to model with polygons - more suited to the NURBS based software they are originally created on).

Also started to work on the side skirts.

Lots of smoothing and modelling on both those areas to do.

Some more quiet time today - so worked on the side skirts. And a whole host of small tweaks.

The wheels are jsut place holders. I'll be modelling the correct M3 ones soon.

Looking great Dave, how long before you can set the scale 1:1 and push it out the the 3D printer

Thought of you when I saw a MK1 Escort on the forest rally at Goodwood

If only I could do that, I'd be continually running out of "ink" !

That would be handy. I've had a good browse in the M3 section and got some good reference pics. I'd love some detail and straight on views of the alloys if you have any ? I need to model them at some point. And any pics showing the different dish for the front and rear alloys would be great too.

A lot of the test pics above use a default gradient background. But - tried out the body by using a HDRI spherical environment map. Good to show up any bumpy areas - but seems to be ripple free. I'm happy so far

It is too high in Polys for a game at present. Just for fun. It certainly makes me understand the form by modelling it. Nothing like a bit of hands-on connection

Grabbed a few hours and started to model the alloys - got some good refs from the M3 boys. Please bear in mind this is VERY early in the modelling process, they will improve. I am just "sketching" the basics now. There is an interesting interior to the M3 Alloys, wheel spoke thickness, cut-outs etc. which I have still to add.

These are ONLY for preview. I am using a multiple symmetry and array method of creation and am perfectly aware that there are not 10 wheel bolt holes. But there is method in my "madness" It will be totally accurate later.

If you can come up with a request list then there should be an M3 available to shoot on the 10th of next month.

Thanks Guys

Lots of nice reference pics. If I need anything specific I'll give you a shout.

Working for a wee while on the Alloys now. Post something later tonight.

Long weekend lies ahead - national holiday here tomorrow

Burned some midnight oil and started on the rear bumper. Complex thing to model with swoops and creases.

Boot and lights not touched yet - just quickly sketched.

I can now see why BMW don't sell them in lime green and mustard yellow

Stunning work Dave. You should be doing this for a job!

Oh, I don't know. Wait until later. I think the mustard colour will be a grower.

Had a nice quiet afternoon working on my M3. Refining the rear panels. Lights are just temporary.

Spent ages setting up a physical Studio environment. As there are a few photographers out there they will know what is involved with that.

I also tested it with varying colours to set up my exposure and tone mapping - settling on a white car. Again the photographers wil tell you that is a difficult colour to capture when you want a balanced exposure and reasonable contrast. Exactly the same problems for me.

Think I am getting there, though

And now, back to the modelling.

Looking awesome Dave Everytime I get to this thread, the results amaze me. Really looking forward to the Hi-Res version. Any chance of a 1600x1200 wallpaper when you're done ?
