A guy I know on another forum got a Vantage V8 (4.7 litre, not the 4.3), three months old, 2,000 miles at 27% off list to allow AM to make their quota.

I guess right time and right place! His had all the desireable extras for not much hugely more than that old one you linked too.

A little patience and searching will bring you a better one but, turning back to the Jag, the XFR is aimed specifically at you, your age grouping etc. so why can't you see yourself in one? Did Jaguar get their demographics wrong?

I see older men in XKs but not XFRs.

All I know about the AM V8 Vantage is that it's just about the best looking and best sounding car on the road. 1000 times better looking than the MB and I wouldn't care if it was a lot slower (which it isn't). Go for it and post videos of the smile you won't be able to remove from your face!!!!! That car is gorgeous!!!!

Yes I guess they are aimed at my age group...but I really don't need such a large car and IMO they don't look different enough to the normal XF. However, they are exceptionally cheap - 09 plates for mid £40k's is a whole lot of car for the money.

Ironically, I actually prefer the XKR but they're a lot more money and will still have a lot of depreciating to do (even by my usual standards). And I probably am still too young for one of these!

Hi Charlie! Yes, it always just a matter of time with...and not a lot of it!

As you can see from above, I'm not all that hot on the Jag for various reasons (it might have been different if my boss didn't have an XF diesel which with it's 20" wheels, looks almost identical to the XFR!).

However, they do sell Aston but don't really have anything in at the moment which stands out - does your contact also sell Aston's or just Jag's?

Err...NO. The Jag is actually likely to be the more modern, reliable and, ultimately better car.

Normally this would take me straight to Jag's door but in this case, up against owning an Aston Martin for short period of my life, it can't compete....even if it is just for image/style reasons!

Nothing much to add to the above!!

AMV8 is a real "sense of occassion" car - I reckon the feel-good factor will make up for any performance defecit.

XKR - is a great package but I can never, however hard I try, get past the Hyundai Coupe front end.....

M3 CSL would definitely be the preferred choice for retaining value.

p.s. you're mad!!

Don't worry about the comparisons with the Big Merc. I'd a thought you'd want something radically different, to make it impossible to compare, otherwise you'll always feel somewhat deflated. C63 vs AMV8 are completely different beasts so virtually impossible to compare and therefore you can't feel like you've 'downgraded'. Even if the AMV8 is slower I doubt it'll feel that different given the noise & occassion is produces. Have you considered the rag-top to further put distance between the two cars?? (edit - perhaps the rag-top is pushing the budget?? Would hold it's value better maybe if you a) get a good price now and b) you plan to sell it when it's sunny)

Have you considered an RX8 - I know where there's one available for immedaite delivery (please!!! ).

Very apt thread :

I see you already have your heart set on the Aston.

The VANTAGE is a cracking looking car. Just not quick enough. Also it is now quite old.

Right, never mind all this Bourny Bondy stuff...whilst the troops were answering the phones and making the money today, I was out looking how to spend!

I went to my local Aston dealer in Derby to look at a selection of examples and I've got to say.....just how disappointed I am. The build quality was shocking, the seats were appalling and although this will vary car by car, the condition of the 06 and 07 plate ones I looked at were, well, just not to my standard. It did sound nice...but AMG nice? Not so sure on that!

Now, I'm not entirely surprised but I guess one just hopes that such a good looking car could be exceptional...but it's not. In fact, I was glad to get back into my C63 which, with the exception of looks and image, was by far the superior car in every other respect. It really did ram home just how good my car is!

I know I shouldn't compare the two...but it's got to be a normal human process to compare despite there being no apparent comparison. I just don't think I could get out of the C63 and into a 3-4 year old Vantage and be happy - I'm too fussy and crave good engineering too much!

I did also sit in a much newer, 09 model year Vantage and to be fair, that was lovely and seemed a totally different car to sit in (not sure about driving but they also have a more powerful 4.7 litre motor). The quality was noticeably better but I can't afford the £75k+ that I would need to get one of these (and if I could, I'd still want something else in a few months).

So, my plan is to keep working on Merc for that deal on the C63 PP+ and in the meantime I might follow the advice from some of you and go have a look at a couple of Jag's just to see what they're like in comparison! They've got to be getting those reviews for some reason
