Some of my reasons:

- if the post makes me laugh, I'll appreciate it
- if I agree with its contents, I'll appreciate it
- if it helps someone, I'll appreciate it
- if I disagree with it, but the person is polite and shows reasoning, I'll appreciate it
- if it adds to the discussion, I'll appreciate it
- if I learn something from the post, I'll appreciate it
- if it will make someone judge me by my appreciation, I'll appreciate it

Some more I can't remember.

In your case, I appreciate the posts I agree with. I have been successful (until recently) in not posting in the politics forum, so I appreciate a post I agree with. Kind of like standing by the pool and just putting your toe in as opposed to jumping in the deep end.

In the actual car forums, I appreciate someone who answers my posts/questions and is helpful to me or others.

"No one replied to you"
