Differences between N54 6MT's?
Hello, question for the N54 guru's here, mechanics etc.
anyone have an idea what the differences in transmissions fit to various N54's are? 135i's get the GS6-53BZ - TJGK 335i started with GS6-53DZ - TJGD, then got GS6-53DZ - THGX bellhousing can't have a different shape as it's an identical engine... length can't be different as the 123d gets the DZ as well (with a different 4 letter code but that can't be major?), so it fits a 1 series.. they both have identical gear ratios: 4.06 2.4 1.58 1.19 1.00 0.87 3.68 3.08 7000 so i'm pretty well stumped as to what possible difference there could be? any ideas? thanks |

Saw your thread on the other site….I can’t confirm with 100% certainty, but there’s no logical reason why a 6MT from an E8x would not fit into an E9x chassis. The catalog number is different but the actual transmission should be identical.

exactly what i was thinking. but i still don't get why the different part number and why is the 135i part number specific to Z4 and 135i. shouldn't be any different from the bell housing, but maybe different on outputshaft/or like someone said gear selector mounts, maybe if i try installing a shifter assembly it wont fit, or it will fit but hit the unibody of the car.. unless i have both transmissions side by side i couldn't tell.

Dang I hadn’t thought it through that much, basically just stopped thinking at “well the bell housing has to be identical, and the ratios/clutchs/tq converters are the same…so must fit”. You could def. be right.
Honestly there’s no way you’ll know without bolting it up. I can’t imagine ZF making a different trans just for the 135i and N54 Z4s, that would be a colossal waste of resources.

and i agree, insane waste of money changing absolutely ANYTHING on the transmission for a single model, when they could easily have designed around it in the first place? :/ I can take measurements of the one i have (whichever it turns out) if anyone has the ability to do the same on whichever is the opposite of the one i have haha |

Ummm... shipping may suck a bit, purely due to weight haha - it was about $200 ish from UK to australia air freight
probably cheaper than trying to get it all sold/get a new one though, if you're serious and we do need to get different ones... yeah would look into it and if we do end up with different transmissions, it'll be easy for us to compare at least? |

I know this thread is very old, but did anyone ever find out what that 4 digit designation stand for or if there's any difference or problems when you put them in? flinchy sammy_0559
