Injector replacement. What's needed for removal and install?

Do you need any special tools for a DIY injector replacement? And what injectors are recommended these days?

I did this job last night and one thing I wish I had was a slide hammer injector removal tool. I only used a angle pick like suggested in a DIY video and I had a lot of trouble removing injector #3 and #6. After a lot of swearing a bruised hands I was able to remove them but it would have been much easier with the proper tool.

If you end up in a situation like the above poster, a special tool may be necessary.

However, in my experience the injector just pulled out by hand and basic tools were all that was needed.

Injector replacement takes all of 15 minutes to change all 6. However they need to be coded in the computer afterwards.

People replace with the latest revision from BMW known as Index 12. They can be sourced other places though under the name OE manufacturers.

Used injectors will need a new o-ring seal which will require a special tool. The decoupling element will also need to be replaced.

Only applies to used injectors as most new ones have new seals and decoupling already.

Thanks for the info, whats the repercussions of daily driving with a leaky injector? Bad idea?

I Coded with INPA. That takes 10 minutes if the software is running on a laptop. As noted above, removal is pretty easy. Didn't need special tools for mine, but they had been changed 40 or 50k earlier.. change plugs while you're there..chances are that if the injectors were bad, the plugs need replaced.

Depending on the severity, fouled plugs, poor fuel economy, fuel washing the cylinders (IE reducing the amount of oil in the cylinder).

I have to say replace ASAP since I don't know how bad it is.

It could also go pop dumping fuel and lead to a blown motor.

Mine were pretty stuck. I clamped onto the long end of an allen wrench using a vise grips and put the other end of the allen under the injector top and pulled up, Worked like a charm.

Yep, that would be worst case scenario next to fuel wash, which would likely pop the motor too.

That's why when I had 2 bad injectors I still replaced all 6. I rather have all of them up to par, spraying the appropriately fuel in all cylinders.

The only thing that is controlled per cylinder is ignition. The Fuel is averaged by the 02 sensorsbetween bank 1 and 2 (Cyl 1-3 Cyl 4-6) so healthy injectors are important.

I bought some that already have the O ring and Decoupler installed. DO i still need the tool to get them back on? My buddy says they are extremely hard to press on without the tool....

To get them back in the head? They press in pretty easy by hand.

Mine were tough to get out but new ones went it pretty easy. Just don't expose the o-ring to air too long before installing.

So if you do, and the rings expand, are they extremely tough?

If you pull the sheath off the O-ring and have to set it aside for some reason, just put the sheath back on until you're ready to push it in. You don't want to mess around with screwing up the o-ring. Theyre not hard to push in by hand, but mine were kind of a pain to pull out (~110k on them).

Very sticky, pretty loud and very harsh for a DD. I haven't been to hwy in 3-4 years

I was going to get those but Tirerack said the noise was harsh for a daily driver. I run square Ventus RS3's with stock wheels.

Until you guys try Federal RSR-R don't say other tires are loud 😬 Oh well, at last they are probably stickier than re71 and definitely stickier than Rs-3. Also, 1/2 the price.

Nate what happened with the injectors? Any updates on the o2 ?
