Warranty is up on the 335d, time for a 328d?

So, about to make a decision on my 2011 335d M Sport. Keep it, buy an extended warranty and maintenance at a cost of almost $6k, or go for a new 328d. Comments? I guess I probably know the answer coming from an E90 forum.....

Warranty is a necessity if I keep the 335d. Just did a CBU overhaul. I am going to block off EGR with the plates and anything else to make it more reliable. Maybe removing DPF etc. will help make it more reliable? Would like to keep a tune, currently running a JBD.

What about the extended maintenance? Could I get away without it save $ at an independent shop? I'm in Miami, so there's a couple around here.

$6k for warranty and maintenance? If youre considering DPF delete then warranty and maintenance plan would be a bad idea. If you do the DPF delete and tune to remove EGR/DPF/DEF then pretty much all your warranty worries should be taken care of and the only maintenance you would need is oil change and fuel filters. Do maintenance plans cover tires and brakes? You can guarantee you can get maintenance for cheaper, they arent losing money on those plans at the dealer.

So if I do DPF delete and tune to remove EGR/DPF/DEF then you think car is bullet proof?

I think youre well down the road to not having any real issues. Most of the problems people have on here are CBU and DEF related. DEF issues would be 100% eliminated with a tune. CBU would be at least significantly reduced and shifted to a valve buildup type CBU like on the gas cars if not eliminated. Other than that, the 335d seems to be extremely reliable.

If your radio goes out they will look past deletes. If you have a problem with anything powertrain related it would be on you. Arent you going to be out of warranty anyway?

Yeah I'd say gut it and enjoy if you do not live in an emissions testing state -- you will be out a) $800 for the downpipe from the devil child, b) ~1,200 from Jarek for the tune including overnight shipping, c) the cost of help with the DPF-ecotomy (don't try to do this in your garage as some suggest), and d) the cost of gutting the SCR catalyst, or replacing with a different exhaust (~$1,000).

I'll be out of warranty but may buy the extended 7 year/ 100k warranty.

I guess I could plate block the EGR and keep it warrantied. Or I could skip the warranty and use the money to go all out on down pipe, DPF delete, etc. Decisions, decisions. If it had a catastrophic failure I'd be screwed though.

I just purchased an e90 335d, and could have gotten a 328d. Why didn't I? The e90 is by most accounts the better sports sedan, BMW went too soft/isolated with the f30. The road and track comparison of the e90 vs f30 pushed me towards the e90. The lack of car and driver 10 best awards for the f30, and well the 328d isn't a great engine in terms of performance.. Seriously 180hp in an expensive car. I'd rather have an Audi A3 for less money then a 328d and.mod it. But personally their too under powered for my taste.

I wanted the ultimate e90 driving machine as my first BMW.

If the car has been reliable... drive it for few more years and go for 535d m sports. Nothing against 328d but going backwards is no bueno.

I drove a friends 328d with X drive. The Xdrive option is very cool and almost worth swapping for. The horse power not so much.
The thing that drove me crazy was the engine shutting off at every stop light.

the 328d is one of the more depressing BMWs I have ever driven.

The gentlemen I just bought my 335d from already had bought a 328d x drive to replace it thinking he would love it. He said he sorely missed the power and driving experience the of the 3.0L and said he would gladly have another 335d if they offered it in a 2015. He asked for one last drive in it before I left haha.

I'd say let all the alphabet parts fall off and enjoy the car. Doing that and minor maintenance will be far cheaper than either another car payment or the extended warranty in the long run.

There's not any other car that can match the performance/fuel mileage/fun factor of the 335d out of the box with minor mods. I can't wait to match TDIWyse's power levels for times like today. This morning I caught a new cts-v off guard when he tried to pass me when the road opened up to two lanes. Once he dropped a gear or two, I was obviously passed (556hp vs stock 335d), but he definitely had to work for it and he certainly didn't pass me like I was standing still. I was glad I had my windows down to hear the LSA whining and roaring away though . I may be a die hard diesel guy, but boosted v8's always sound great. Now can you imagine how mad he would've been to lose to a car that can get 40mpg on the highway? Certainly can't do that in a 328d.

You're definitely right. Love seeing the faces of guys in newer 5.0 mustangs when they realize a BMW diesel is hanging with them. Looks kinda like this:

328d is way louder than 335d. It actually sounds like a diesel.
As with any new BMW, the steering is very bad.

No need for the maintenance. BMW tries to say brakes are so expensive and save so much. Brakes are one of the easiest DIY's ever. Dealer charges $120 for an oil change. I'd spend at least $90 in parts so I let them do it and I get a loaner. Fuel filter isn't too bad every other year either.

$120 for an oil change on a diesel?
I wish. It's double that just about everywhere (at the dealer).

I have not seen many 328ds around at all. I only get jealous when I see them with the station wagon x drive models.

These f3x 328ds have been around for about three years now (2012 - 2015?), and the e90 335ds were imported from 2009 to 2011? Also three years? Am I missing something here because I do see e90 335ds occasionally, but very rarely do I see f3x 328ds. And there should be more 328s around because they are cheaper.

I had the 328d as a loaner when mine was getting some repairs. I was so happy to get my torque back.

Go test drive the 328d and if you don't miss your car after a 30 min drive then swap it out.

Exact same experience...328d is not a car for those of us who care about performance before fuel economy.

I consider fuel economy a performance measure, just like acceleration, handling, etc. The reason I think this way is that just like BMW did with the e90 M3, anyone can put a bigger engine into a smaller car and claim its better. Not at 15 mpg for me. Performance means more than power and acceleration.
