335d ticking Updated with video
hiya. I've got a 2007 335d (uk) and I'm getting a strange ticking noise. wondered if anyone can help me.
this noise has been bugging me for a while now, I've even convinced myself at times it is normal but I don't think it is. generally it only seems to happen when the engine is warm, most noticeable under slight acceleration and can only be heard from inside the cabin. it's definitely coming from the engine bay somewhere. it also changes with the engine speed. I've had checked it with Itsa-d and no faults show up and the smooth running specs are are in normal values. At idle the car is fine, no loss of power. im thinking an injector? I'm sure somethings not right as the 335d engine is generally smooth and quiet but this doesn't seem normal. can anyone Help? thanks |

Common rail diesels are known for injector noise if they are dirty or worn or possible injector noise from advanced timing. I'm not sure if this is your problem or not. Can you capture a video of the noise?

I'll try and capture a video over the next day or 2.
However it's the only thing you really hear in the cabin on acceleration. Of you have the radio on it drowns it out. It's like almost like the sound of rear 2 injectors nearest the cabin are coming through the firewall into the cabin. But I've checked all the fittings for the pollen filter and there are no gaps and every thing is in place. Just wish I could get to try another 335 d near me. Can anyone else hear a ticking noise on acceleration without the radio on. Inside the cabin, Windows up? |

Ticking is not normal. I just finished a CBU cleaning tonight and you can't even hear diesel clatter on acceleration. After my CBU the idle was barely noticeable.
Does it sound like a tick or a bunch of clattering as you accelerate? Injector timing ticks sounds like a crackle or a quick clattering and is very distinctive and you are unlikely to have timing clatter without a tune or something that advances injector timing. A bad injector has a softer ticking noise and is likely to only sound in a single injector cycle. |

There is another thread on this same topic. Guy and his dad had same engine. One ticked and other didn't. Don't remember outcome. It might be over in the European diesel section. One car was 335 and other was a 535D, but this is from memory.

I did a search on ticking in thread titles only within our sub forum. I got two other hits besides your thread.

That's where I would start... use the recommended amount of your favorite reputable diesel fuel treatment with injector cleaner. It might take 2 or 3 tanks of fuel to clean your injectors. It may not save it if the injector is too far gone. It could also be a valvetrain noise.

I have always used power service on my common rail diesels and can only say it has provided positive results. I also have a 2004 1 ton Dodge Cummins that I run a few bottles a year.

+1 for Power service additive. I have also used Amsoil in the past and both products are equally good.

The fuel door or cap is marked to NOT use any additives(at least in North America). You should hold on adding the additive until dealer helps you. I as many others here use additives but I felt important that you knew we are all going against BMW "doctrine".

I'm slightly concerned that because there are no fault codes and the smooth running adaptions are all in spec that they will just pass the car back to me. It goes in tomorrow morning. Will keep all updated. |

It's seems more related to the load on the engine rather a particular rpm |

I'm booked in for around 930 am GMT. But have to leave it with them.
I'm going to try to get to speak to the tech directly as if I just leave a load of notes with the service desk things might not get explained properly. |

Right well I got the car back. They ran a few tests and went for a test run and could not find any issue.
They did however reset the injector adaptions as a test measure and things are much quieter. |
