Less turbo lag? -- is it in my head?

So many of you know about the flap in one of the exhaust pipes that is meant to alter the exhaust note to make it more refined. I had the similar thing in my E46 330i but in that car the exhaust droning with the flap disabled was giving me a headache while cruising. I decided to see how it will feel in my E92 and disabled it. Only I went down a much easier route, instead of pulling the vacuum hose off the solenoid I just disconnected the electrical actuator that opens up the vacuum line to close the solenoid. This actuator is located right under the driver side taillight from inside. To get to it all you have to do is pop open the little cover in the trunk behind the taillight and you'll see the electrical connection on the bottom right side of the panel.

I have to say that the exhaust is now more audible with a partial throttle but it's not giving me a headache. But what I did notice more now is that if feel like the there less turbo lag when I step on the gas below 3K rpm... I think it's just in my head but not sure.... anyone else tried this before? do you feel the same thing?

thanks

In relations to other turbo cars it's very small but it's there, under 3K if you get on the gas the power comes in 2 stages, these stages are only like .3 seconds apart but I can feel it.

The turbo lag can certainly be felt while driving, haven't tried this but sounds simple enough.

good idea!

Nice...sounds like I should try this. Little more exhaust sound at low revs and possibly less turbo lag, exactly what I was looking for

Would it be possible to post pics of the electrical connection? I haven't looked back there yet...maybe there's only one connection you can see...?

And sorry to dissapoint aqua, but there is definitly detecable turbo lag. It's very minimal, but if you've ever driven a big naturally aspirated engine (like Chevy LS1, LS2, ect.) then you will notice the lag. Then again compared to my A3 with the turbo motor, which is not known for big lag, the BMW feels much more responsive, I mean ALOT more.

you guys are high. There is no turbo lag to begin with. If there was I certainly would have noticed it upsetting the car on the track. Its completely smooth.

After I realized that you have to push the locking pin instead of trying to remove it... I must say GREAT find and super-easy to do. Literally a 1-minute job.

I will likely replace the connector in the winter. Sounds good with the windows down, but the is a bit of droning at highway speeds that's noticeable with the windows up.

It's in your head. Your hearing a louder engine and it feels liek the a more quicker response. but the N54's biturbos are spooling at 1400rpms, thus there is no lag to begine with..!!

i would have expected some lag.. but i guess reading various posts on how great the 335i bi-turbos are, i thought otherwise... anyway.. i do know what turbo lag is : currently in our garage -

1) 2004 s600 v12 kompressor (np lag whatsoever)
2) 2004 e320 (some lag, but associated with the auto transmission i think)
3) 2005 mini cooper S (automatic, but cannot feel any lag at all.. i think thats the difference between the superchanger and the turbo, especially with the step paddle shifters, power is always right there)
4) 2005 c230 kompressor (getting sold simply bec of the amount of @@# turbo lag from a slow start on the street.. that car is simply horrible to drive).
5) Used to have a 2004 325i with absolutely smooth, no lag power.. hence the c230 is getting replaced by the new 3er coupe.

It's all relative, after you drive a car with a naturally aspirated engine and individual throttle bodies you will start noticing it... but once again in the turbo world the lag is almost non-existent.

Spooling is not a boolean process, you don't go from "not spooled at all" to "completely spooled"... there are many grades of "spooled" in between.

I've search in some other messages as well as this one (I've probably gone through 20 pages of messages), but still cant find one with a picture of this actuator.

If someone has a pic of this, can you please post it? If not, I'll see if I can with a little trial and error (hopefully no error).
