For those of you live in VA, Is washing my car on driveway is not allowed???

Hi, our family just moved in to great falls, VA. I just got noticed by people around me claiming that it is not legal to wash my car on my driveway. Could this really be true??

LOL what?

That is the craziest thing I've ever heard and I live about 3 miles from you.

Unless you live in some kind of housing association in Great Falls then there are no state rules about it. I must admit VA has some crazy laws, but its not that crazy.

You probably live in the most expensive part of the state, and as far as I can recall Great Falls is old enough where I don't see any housing associations existing but I could be wrong.

By the way you'll probably be better off posting this in the mid-atlantic section since most VA guys read and post there.

Not to my knowledge. I know Carolina is under that sort of restriction due to a drought (at least they were a month or 2 ago), but I hadn't heard anything of the sort in my area of VA.

Could just be your HOA

Next time someone tells you that ask them for the statute number and then verify it with the county/city officials. If it's illegal then there's a statute; if there's not a statute then it's not illegal.

I'm pretty sure it isn't a law but it could certainly be your HOA rule. . .
But in that case there should be a specific spot located somewhere in your neighborhood designated for washing your car. . .

Great Falls is like 5 minutes from my house. From what i see most houses there are from 1 million to 10-15 mil. There is no ghetto area, so how could you not wash your car in the driveway?? that doesn't make any sense to me. Unless they want to maintain certain standard like, rich neighborhood and they don't want people washing their car. They want pro(s) doing it. There is no law. I wash my car in my driveway once a week.

+1 that the neighbor may be referring to a HOA rule. It's not a Commonwealth or Fairfax County rule.

One thing to consider. Many areas in Northern VA (until recently) have been in a drought. Where I live, you would have been heavily fined for washing your car, watering your lawn, etc.

As of April or so, we have been out of a drought, and can wash cars again. We were in a drought for almost a calendar year prior to that.

Except that most HOA's can fine you if you break their covenants. And if you do it enough some HOA's have the power to take your home.

They can't take your home, at most put a lien on it.

It really pisses me off that my condo bldg in DC unplugged the dial on the faucets in our parking garage. It can't be that they don't want water in the garage, because they power wash the freaking floors every day.

I've lived in Great Falls for almost my entire life, washed many cars at my house and my friends houses, its definitely not illegal, but may be some neighborhood covenants. I could see something like that being enforced in an uptight neighborhood like the reserve. But the water preservation for drought also could make sense as a temporary mandate.
