Bobike child seat - for MTB

Quick question....are these front fitted seats any good?

They look great, and are Mumsnet seat of the year 2011 - but as ever is it just hype or the real deal. The concept seems better than seats at the rear?

Plus - do they fit MTBs OK - looks like you may need a cross bar adapter?

On a sort of related subject, my MTB is a cheapo vintage GT LTS-3 with full suspension circa 1996 - which has a tioga stem which I find rather short (i.e. my arms don't feel long enough when cruising) - what can I replace it with? - maybe it would sort the seat mount issue too?

Or should I just get a new bike

Any suggestions around £800 welcome. Nothing hardcore needed - just light with at least front suspension.

Can't beat the new Boardman 2011 MTB range at any price point imo. They are starting to make their way into local Halfords stores.

As much as I love that it wont work on a modern mountain bike. The adapter for a mountain bike fits to the cross bar which must be horizontal, youre not going to have that on your funky specialized jobby.

Hmm, thought it maybe tricky. This is picture of a bike like mine - any chance it could be made to fit with a new stem?

Thanks for the replies - the boardman stuff seems to get rave reviews, is cheap and has what seem to be top end componentry. Whats the catch?

That might just work if you could put a bit of a bend in to the locating pins to stop the seat leaning back too much.

The catch with Boardman bikes is that they are sold exclusively by Halfords so it will probably be so badly set up that it will be dangerous when it comes from the shop. They are great bikes, you won't beat the spec of a boardman for the money.

On the subject of that child seat. I don't like it, it will make wheelies difficult. I'll be getting one of the ones that goes off the back for my boy. It'll improve my wheelies

LOL - joking aside I thought the idea of always being able to see them rather than them being behind you was quite appealing...?

Yup, joking aside. I would be interested in testing one of those seats out. It does make more sense to have the childs weight more central on the bike rather than hung over the back wheel.

For £800 you can get a nice Specialized Rockhopper. No suspension needed. Wife has one and it's stonking VFM and very well specced.

Job done.

Not sure on the seats - I'd favour a tag along or traditional seat. Heavy bars really muck up handling and will make your forks go all weird.
