$340 LSD BOLT ON? (www.racingdiffs.com)

(web link)

(e92 330d drifting with the conversion)

(demonstration of kit)

Has anyone tried this kit? Does it fit every differential?

(talked to a rep for my diff they told me to run this)
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Bmw-E90-E92...iQgI2YmSzRUfJs

(and to replace side seals)
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Bmw-E46-E81...SR1O7O_qBETYLY

Does any one know the longevity of these conversion kits? Thank you in advance!

I've never personally ran one, but I've done lots of lunchbox lockers.

essentially it's the same concept. pop the side gears and the cross shaft, replace open diff spiders with traction device.

things that are cool:
You don't have to rebuild your diff or do a full gear setup like a carrier replacement.
It's cheap(relatively)
It's definitely a DIY doable thing in your garage.

Things that are a bummer:
The carrier is still the weak link.
The space inside the open carrier is limited, and is a constraint on the clutch pack/tooth engagement area.
Cross pins tend to break when abused unless replaced with a hardened piece, but a hardened cross pin makes the carrier the weak link. I've seen dana axle carriers broken, everything from D30s to D60s.

so there's the pros and cons as I'm familiar with similar products in solid axles.

edit:
also, highly interested myself.
so certainly report back if you do it.

I just bought this a week ago or so. Going to install it in a few months when the weather is not absolute garbage.

I emailed them and got the install instructions, but I'll be busy the next few days out of town.

I'll review them and see what's up. Some people are bummed that you have to grind some things in the carrier to get the bits in, but that's pretty standard affairs when installing a lunchbox style traction device in your open diff.

I've ground a lot of ring gear teeth to fit cross shafts with no issues, and those axles likely saw way more beatings than the diff in a BMW.

never did come update this.

they didn't send me the install instructions, it was a brochure.
I emailed them back asking for the actual instructions.
*crickets*

I'm not so interested to bother them any more.
because N52 powered AWD e91. Traction is never an issue for me.

well, I went into my email and searched again, they did reply with the installation instructions and I missed it.

so that's my bad.

basically it looks like they're using the factory side gears, and then inserting a sprung clutch pack inbetween them in place of the spiders. So you have to grind the side gears to fit the clutch pack.
Should be somehting done on a lathe, since you're creating bearing surfaces, but I'm sure you could get it done on a belt sander if you're not an idiot.

You'll also have to cut the stub shafts on the flanges so they don't hit the new shit in the middle of your diff. I've shortened axle shafts with cut off wheels. It's not that critical.
I'll attach the instructions.

edit:
well evidently I won't, because the board won't complete the upload.

Quote:
3. Grind the main gears so that the
distance between them is 32mm.
The best way to do this is by
using surface grinder.
Recommended grinding:
210mm – 0.95mm each gear
188K/L - 2.45mm each gear
188mm – 0.25mm each gear
Grinding should be done on fl at
surface grinder or precise Lathe,
from the top side facing central
Quote:
8. Take both drive fl anges and cut them form top for 5mm. This should be
done by machining. Don’t forget to chamfer edges like on original. This
will make pu ng fl anges back in diff eren al very easy.

A few delays. Please hang tight. I haven't forgotten about this thread. My intent is to document as much as I can so people can follow along all of these different mods and make educated decisions.

This is weird. I thought I already put a reply here.

Anyways, got the car back a few days ago. It's nice. The diff does feel different, right now the car is getting a new tune (more mods went in) so I didn't fully get a chance to hoon it.

It was a bit wet outside, I put it in 1st and matted it, then turned the wheel, the car slid for sure but just not sure if it's to the same level like my old E36 M3 did - that spun instantly.

Anyways, when I looked for the tire marks, I saw two very clearly on the ground so that's positive.

I'll do a bit more homework when the car is back in my possession.

Bump because I'm very interested in this! This is my first BMW, and I've got it pretty dialed in but it really needs a LSD! Looking forward to more detailed feedback.

I was at an intersection with no one around. I locked the wheel and hit it...car did a full 180. It was awesome!
