trouble with ipod functionality...
did a search but couldn't quite find the answer....
i have a new 2008 335i coupe. the 6fl is not working as it should. upon delivery, the car would not recognize my ipod. we are using the correct "y" connector. it will play fine, but only as an AUX input. the USB cannot be selected. you get no control via the steering wheel or iDrive. the dealer thought it might be the cord, but it was too late in the evening. i live 120 miles away from the dealer. has anyone else had this prob? thanks for the help. btw - i love this car!!!!!!!! cant wait for the break-in to be done! |

So we know your 3.5mm (AUX) port works. Perhaps your car's USB port is dead. That should be easy to test if you have a thumb drive. Stick some MP3 or AAC files on the thumb drive and plug it in. If that doesn't work, you probably need them to fix the usb port.

Any update on this? I just picked up my 2008 E92 335 on 12/23/07, and am having the exact same problem as the OP. I'm not electrionically gifted, so I can't say that I can test the thumb file thingy. Idrive won't even let me select USB.

I have an 08 and my iPod Nano works ok. Some songs are listed by the goofy way that iTunes labels the directories, but they all work (minus 40% of the titles). I'm going to try and wipe the iPod and try downloading to iPod with Winamp instead.

just an update on my situation, it appears the car blew out my ipod (nano gen 2). When i try to connect my ipod back to my comp, the computer doesn't find the hardware. unfortunately it looks like the ipod only has a year warrenty, which just passed i think.
Has anyone else seen this problem before? Last edited by beiowulf; 02-19-2008 at 04:22 PM.. |

I have an 08 E90 335xi with the usb/aux option. Will not recognize new ipod classic. When plugged in with the BMW y-cable, the ipod says "Connected- OK to disconnect" but the car does not recognize it at all- only blanks under "aux" and "usb" and no "ipod" on the "audio" menu. When you unplug it, the ipod stays on this screen and requires a hard reset. Tried it with only the usb and the ipod will say "Connected- eject before disconnecting". At first the car would recognize it under "usb" but most of the songs were named some sort of gobbledegook like "asgfhk". Then that stopped working, too. Now not recognized on "usb" either. The only way to play it in the car is to use only the "aux" plug with a Radio shack cable. Cannot control it at all with the car's audio system so you have to get it out and look at it to change songs, etc. So basically it's the same as just about any Honda Fit or Chevy Aveo out there at this point. Sure glad BMW "partnered" with Apple to bring us this great feature. I really feel special. Hopefully they can fix it next time I take it into the dealer, but you really hate to have to go in for stuff like this so it will probably wait awhile.
In the meantime, I'll be sure to give the thumbs up to any Fit or Aveo drivers I see, 'cause I know they're jammin' just like me (especially when I see them looking down at their ipod when they should be looking at the road).

after reading a few more posts, i went into disk mode (middle clicker plus menu for 6 sec -> middle clicker plus play button for 6 sec). And was able to connect to my computer again. just to make sure it was still working i sync'd my list, then when i was done i had to do a reset again (middle clicker plus menu for 6 sec). Plugged it back into my car and it's working again. Although it sounds like a i need the bmw special cable to get the full functionality

Hello all. I have a brand new 2008 335i and my iPod Touch does not work with my car. When plugged in using the latest Y connector from BMW, I get sound through the speakers, but on the iDrive screen, all I get is the word "AUX". My songs are not displayed on the screen. Does anyone know what could be causing this? BMW says that I have the latest cable and that it should work. From posts I have seen elsewhere on the Net, other people seem to be experiencing the same problem with their 5th generation iPods. I think the important thing to note is that it's the 5th generation of devices that doesn't seem to work. Previous iPods seem to function fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Funny thing is it works half of the time when im freeway driving (shows the song titles on the screen) but when i slow down and stop, it goes to FM again and then it doesnt show the songs titles on the screen any more. WEIRD . i dont know why....

same here....first week in the car, my fourth gen ipod worked fine connected via the Y connection, then reconnected the ipod after a day at work and gave me the "ok to disconnect" message and the car never recognized the ipod again. I tried three other ipods in the house (all nano's) and they all work fine. I wanted a new ipod anyway, but now i am concerned about getting a new classic based on what i read above...weird.

Mac OS or Windows
Just curious, are you all having trouble with iPod's formatted for Windows or Mac OS? I know their file structures are different and would not be surprised that BMW designed their system to the Windows file spec. My suspicion falls apart when tested with Nano's - i tried three generations of Nano's and could not replicate the problem. From reading all of the above and comparing the iPod classic performance to my fourth gen iPod, i think the problem is with the larger capacity iPod's.
