Unfortunately my friend's wife was flashed doing 99mph in a 50mph zone.

Does anyone have any advice on how to handle & the kind of penalty they can expect?

flashed at 99 means she was indicated well over 100....

own up to being a tool and take what ever gets thrown at her, shes lucky it was 99 and not the 100+ that was on her dash.

It's so unlike her that we are deliberating whether the camera was even calibrated properly, if the car speedo is out & if another car set it off.

Yes a good lawyer is needed - has anyone been in similar position? We're wondering if a ban is likely even if it is not quite double the limit.

Wow that's some speed difference! I wouldn't have thought that the speedo on the car was out, as you'd kind of know you were doing 100mph, irrespective of what car you were in.

Might be a shout about the camera not being calibrated properly - I'm pretty sure you can ask for a check to be done of other people caught by that camera within a certain time limit.

Does she admit she was doing that sort of speed at that time? If so then potentially pointless asking about calibration as it will just confirm her speeding. If she was doing no where near that sort of speed then definitely worth asking as it does mean that's not reading correctly and there is a possibility of getting it thrown out if the camera is shown to be faulty.

If guilty then a ban is pretty guaranteed as it's basically twice the limit. Doing over 100 on the motorway with limit being 70 is a ban usually.

Almost a hundred in a fifty, ridiculous. Was she using her mobile & or doing her hair/makeup at the same time? Maybe when she gets a ban it'll will teach her a lesson, then again she may have been lucky enough to have been flashed by a camera with no film in it.

if this is Km/h maybe, I have hard time believing Mazda 2 can do 116mph Drove that car and it struggled to get to 80mph.

I had a friend who done 100+ in a 600hp Audi, he went to court and got a fine and some points.. Realistically speaking though, exceeding the limit by that far I think you've just got to accept something quite severe will come of it.. I think the difference between a ban and what my friend got will depend on who you have on the day and what type of road it was.

As for calibration, there should be white markings on the road which is used to calculate one point to another so that should verify things if you wanted to query the camera. Do bare in mind however, by disputing the speed it may make matters worse.

I can't imagine how she must feel right now, but depending on how you look it, this is the best case scenario. She was almost doubling the speed limit and thankfully nobody was ran over or there wasn't a crash that would catastrophic in comparison to whats happened now. It's just looking at it in more of an optimistic way.

The guidelines for speeding penalties changed in 2017. In a 50mph zone, you'll generally be offered a fixed penalty up to 74mph, but above 75mph it's a court appearance. A magistrate has more-or-less free reign when it comes to penalties, but the guidelines suggest 6 points on your licence or disqualification for between 7 and 56 days, as well as a fine of 150% of your weekly income. It can be more - a lot more.
If they have genuine excuse for driving at 99 in a 50, then it's worth stating this, but if it smells like a crock of poo, just tell them to keep their mouth closed as it'll generally make things worse. Also a letter from an employer may be taken into consideration to minimise a ban, but conversely the fine will go up in those cases.
In the absolute worst case the driver can be charged with dangerous driving, which carries more severe penalties than those for speeding.

Not to mention the adverse effect that a conviction for dangerous driving will have on your insurance premium

Insurance might not be an issue for a few months
Anyhow, it's all speculative. I know people who have received a summons for 37 in a 30 & had 6 points and a £375 fine. There's no consistency when it comes to a magistrate.

100% correct. I could be describing a very different story here.

Still quite dumbfounded at how someone with a squeaky clean licence with no real interest in cars or speed can double the speed limit one evening.

We will all have to eat our words if the camera is found to be faulty - ill keep you guys posted
