2012 E92 armrest usb not reading

I plug my iPhone 8+ into my armrest USB with the OEM Y-cable will charge phone but not read at all. Also will not read USB when trying to update and I know I need software updates?????

Use a flash drive formatted as FAT 32, include a couple of mp3 files and give it a shot, see if it will read it or not.
