Peter if you didn't mind miles of 50k approx. David Prentice BMW in N Ireland have a 35d SE 2008 car, dynamic pack and aero kit. On for £23995 but less would get it I'm sure.
Has the all important 35d engine. |

Or Bavarian Belfast have a 30d SE 2008, very high spec including individual leather and TV, 40k miles in black, £21995 before negotiation.
Transporting a car from here to England is about £200 or flights here to view very cheap although most BMW dealers should be able to provide good pics and stand by their description of the car. |

Will take a look at those cars in NI.
The rough figures for the new X5, I presume it was the base model 30d SE (it has metallic and media as standard) was £3000 deposit and £650/month roughly. I didn't enquire further but it must have been over 4 years. There would have been a healthy discount there via BMW forces discount scheme. Still too much for me though. |

Am in a real quandary now having seen both the X3 and the X5. I think we would be very happy having an X3, nice looking car and lovely inside, however, both the X3 and the X5 are simply not big enough in the boot area. In fact they were both disappointingly small. I have a need for space for the three dogs (not particularly large dogs) and the occasional dog crate in the boot. Both cars could not accommodate that, really disappointed. Coming from the square backed Volvo V70 I have been spoiled for space. The 5 Touring is the same, depth of boot as the V70 is just about ok, but height and the sloping roof no good. I looked at a Volvo XC90 on the way home, space is not much bigger than the BMW.
So, where to go now. It looks I might have to go back to looking at Discovery 4's (with £475 annual road tax!) - I know the boot space in them is big and more than adequate. I still have to move the 640d on though (couldn't afford Disco and the 640d at the same time). What to do, the Volvo is going back to the lease company in about 4/5 weeks! |

I went back to the dealer yesterday and (with their agreement) had the 3 dogs in the back of the demo X5........ I would say it was a tidy, if quite cosy, fit! .... 815ltrs(V70) vs 620ltrs (X5). It is doable.... Just. I got a speculative quote on their unregistered white X5 M Sport, even with a 15% or so discount, the £750/monthly payment is laughably over budget !
So, still on the lookout.......I am just so tight though, and I want the bargain of the century..... |

What do we think of this one? xDrive35d M Sport, late 2009 59 plate, 37k miles and just around the corner from me in Park Lane! Spec not massive, but have the all important media, xenons, 20" wheels etc......
http://www.approved.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/...ce_DESC%7Clist Probably worth a look later this week when I can spare an hour... |

Chrome trim isn't really an option, its a choice of either that or shadow line at ordering for the same price.
Spec on that M Sport is fine as it has the essentials of media, zenons and heated seats. However something a bit odd about the wheels, they are early SE 20" upgrade ones rather than M Sport wheels. If you like them its no big issue but might be a bargaining tool if you "seem" to not like them. However biggest issue is you said you need side steps, they can't be fitted to M Sport and the side sills will break if someone uses them as a step. |

Funny you should say that about the wheel, I was looking at them thinking something wasn't quite right, they look tiny. Might be just the angle, or perhaps not cleaned up enough, or even M Sport Suspension deleted as it's sitting quite high up?????

Am homing in on the silver X5 at Park Lane. Quoted 8.2% APR on a pcp which is good. Only downside is that the car has had 4 owners in total in 4 years, is this a Problem? Its had 4 new tyres and a service as prep for sale.

Hey Pete, i guess if you keep it for a couple of years the owners won't matter but give it a year or so and that's 5 owners in 5 years and personally that would put me off.
The car itself looks nice and has the right spec (xenons etc), not sure why the wheels would have been changed. Would be worth looking at what the car came with. Are they moving on the price? |

Number of owners does make me think twice, but if we keep it for three years, it will be 7 years old, 5 owners and a full BMW history. I haven't seen it yet, was supposed to go today but had a change of diary schedule, so will be at Park Lane at 0900 tomorrow. The one at Bury St Edmonds is also a contender and they have asked me not to put a deposit on the Park Lane one until I have spoken to them again. I do like a bit of a competition, but the Park Lane one is very very convenient from work. |

Strangely, £1000 more than the park lane car but 6 months older. Same miles but 2 owners.
I think the difference is the colour, wheels and a reverse camera. |

I had an email to say this one is back on the market, the buyer having failed to get finance.
2008, 35000miles, good spec and I could afford to buy this one outright on HP. |

Peter, my dad has an X5 40d SE Dynamic pack facelift which will be 3 yrs old end of year. He drives normally and 30 mpg is what it does, its a fair tank of a car and cannot say I like it much but admire what it can do. I am guessing he will buy the new one end of year or start of next when M sport or Dynamic 40d equivalent comes out.
If you are not using the 640d well it's dead money so that has to go and if it has to be a BMW then X5 or a 5 series touring seem your only option. If you can get shot completely a Skoda Superb Estate could be an equally good and cheaper option and new / next to new in comparison. I guess the 6er never really floated your boat due to work commitments and time. My assumption with no disrespect is it's a bit of a dull old barge and the price per month for an expensive car was a big draw rather than stopping and thinking am I going to really enjoy driving this car. Hope all goes well on the car search and looks like you are trying to get the best fit for current circumstances which is clearly the right way to go.

The 640d s a little soulless really, incredible car for the money and it has presence, but I will not miss it. It only has 8000 miles on the clock, so I shudder to thing of the £ per mile cost - let's not go there. To be fair, now working in London, I personally have no need for a car (i am officially now a bus wanker), so it's all about fulfilling the Mrs vehicular needs and ensuring she is happy. She would be very very content with a 4x4 (an X5 would fit the bill for her) complemented by (yet another) automatic Mini. |
