Replacement of N55 fuel injectors

Who has replaced their N55 OEM fuel injectors? I am talking about a DIY replacement rather than a BMW service center replacement.

Have you replaced individual injectors rather than all 6 at the same time? Have you used BMW service tool number 13 0 270 to remove the OEM injectors or not> BMW claims that removal without this tool may damage the injector. Of course we know that the OEM may recommend service tools which are not strictly required from time to time.

Have you utilized the Bosch injectors available on RA and others, in lieu of the BMW part numbers? The Bosch parts are half the price of the BMW parts. It seems to me that this coudl be a good option, particularly for those who are replacing all of the injectors at the same time.

Bosch makes the OEM injectors, so using OE Bosch injectors will be fine (just won't have a BMW logo on the injector).

What issue are you having?

I removed some of my injectors when replacing the servomotor. I did not have the tool, but did have a stuck injector that i worked around instead of removing. I am not sure if the tool would have gotten the injector out.

Long Cranking

My car has long cranking cycles after it has been sitting with the engine off for 8 or 9 hours. It also seems to need me to open the throttle a bit in order to have a mixture that will ignite. It has been doing this for 20,000 miles, but is getting worse now. Other starts during the day will be completely normal. Before anybody says it is the HPFP again, I have never seen any warning light to indicate a problem with this.

You might want to look into coils and plugs before injectors.

Coils and Plugs, really?

I can do as you suggest, but I sure do not see the connection between having to use the throttle during a cold start and coils or plugs. Can you explain the logic so I will feel better about it?

Garage List
Rockauto.com sells oem injectors for 115.00...for n54... Perhaps for n55 as well? Not sure if the two motors share the same part#.

Fyi...if your urgent injectors are below index 11 you have to replace them all. Dealing with this now. Replaced one with index 12 and because all my others were 9's and 7's the car ran like shit and misfired with white smoke. Not good.

My tech said I could get the Bosch injectors for my N55 for $40/a piece! That's good for us N55 guys I'd have to say!

I'm not the guy you were replying to, but I'd say your symptoms sound more fuel related.

Do you get a gassy smell during these long crank episodes?

I would guess you have a vac leak, bad O2 sensor or bad plugs before a bad injector. If you had a bad injector you would be getting misfire codes. Rough cold starts can be so many things other than a bad injector.

Bad Injector

First off, the N55 injectors are different from the N54 injectors, which were the Piezo type. N55 injectors are solenoid type and are the current Bosch Technology for direct injection gasoline engines.

Can't catch me: RA sells OEM injectors (with the BMW insignia on them) for $171 each. RA sells the Bosch injectors for $85 each. Bosch claims that they are the OE supplier and that these injectors provide the exact flow and original spray pattern for optimal performance. I doubt that your Tech is correct on his price.

Stashtrey: All of the Index numbers that I have ever heard of relate to the N54 injectors, so I do not know if N55 injectors have an index number or not. Is it possible that BMW/Bosch got it right the first time with the N55? Reminds me of my '86 Porsche 944 Turbo. When I bought the car in 1988, Porsche was already up to index 19 on the clutch plates. I had to pay to have one of those installed when the drivetrain was out for a new clutch throwout bearing (luckily this part was covered by warranty).

Galahad05: No gassy smell during or after long cranking cycles.

Weehe126: I hope you are right, but the idle is not rough after cold starts, after it finally starts.

There are too many possibilities, so against my better judgement I am going to let the local dealer diagnose it. My attempts to validate the problem on this forum have really not shown a pattern of injector problems on the N55 like there were on the N54, so maybe it is really something else. These engines are really, really complex.

Man, unless you get VERY lucky, you're just going to have the dealership perform a series of "Is it the coils? Let's try the coils. No? Let's try the plugs. No? Let's try the injectors. No?", etc. Then they'll bill you for coils, injectors, plugs, etc.

Wait, you are out of warranty right?

Long Cranks

Dealer took the car in for examination yesterday without me signing for any responsibility for anything. About 3 hours ago he sent me email saying that it was the HPFP. What he has not said yet is whether BMW is going to cover all, some, or none of the repair. My car is a 2011 335i sedan, built in Munich in August 2011 and has 61,000 miles on it. It is completely stock other than the non run-flat tires.

What is a reasonable full BMW service shop cost for the HPFP replacement?

My feeling is that BMW should be paying for everything, but that does not make it so.

They will only cover it if you are under warranty. I'm sure they will charge $1500 for it.

Damn, just took a quick look. From what I saw, the HPFP extended warranty was for e9x's up to the 2010 model year. Anyone know if that was expanded to cover later years?

That warranty was for 8 years or 82,000 miles.

Doubt you have an issues with your injectors. Also, a weak HPFP wont throw a CEL on the dash....

My 2011 335 N55 HPFP was weak and failed the dealer bleed down test. Also had a few shadow codes for it. Was replaced at 88K miles on third party warranty. Long cranking cycles werre the symptoms.

The injectors in the N55's usually last well over 200K miles.

N55 Injectors

Does anyone know if its possible to pull N55 injectors out and put them back in without damaging them?

I'm having VANOS replaced and the injectors have to be pulled out. The dealership is saying doing so will damage the injectors and they too will need to be replaced (an additional $2,900 bill).

I've talked to several friends that say this is BS. And these friends are pretty reliable sources... 1 guy was a BMW service adviser for years and the other an actual BMW dealership mechanic for 10 years.

I call BS as well. I have not had any injector issues with my car, but 3 things tell me they are feeding you BS:

1) If the injectors are 1 time use only, in any procedure in the Bentley manual (or any other e90 factory manual) it will state, must replace injector with new injector. Ask them to show you this in the manual.

2) Several companies make a tool to safely remove and install N55 injectors.

3) Sets of used N55 injectors are being sold on ebay by recyclers.

I've replaced many injectors on non DI engines, and you can absolutely re-use them on a non DI engine.

I have been dealing with a BMW dealership and the fuel injector replacement. I have an issue with my valvetronic system and dealership told me that I would be responsible for the cost of them removing and replacing the fuel injectors in order to get the actual work done that is needed (I have an extended warranty). I was told that it was impossible to remove the fuel injectors without damaging them. They were going to charge me $3400 for the replacement of my n55 fuel injectors. luckly after calling some independent shops and BMW service centers I learned that it is possible to remove the injectors without damaging them as long as you have the specific tool for removing the injectors (although it can be tricky to use the tool and not damage the part). I was also informed on the actual cost of new OEM fuel injectors. With this new information I negotiated with the dealership.
