I own a 2011 335d which had the front pads and rotors replaced recently. Post install, I immediately noticed how DUSTY my wheels got. I had nearly 17k mi on my old pads and did not have ANY issues with brake dust. Now my front wheels are coated in brake dust in a matter of a couple of days.

I questioned my SA about whether the tech installed a softer compound pad on my car and he said they are OEM and BMW only makes one type of pad for my car to which I responded I did not have a brake dust problem before the new pads were installed.

My question for the community and to anyone with inside knowledge, does BMW offer a harder and softer comound brake pad or did BMW change the pad composition between late '10 (when my car was built) to now?

I don't know if the compound has changed, but the brake pads on my 2006 330i have always made an obscene amount of dust.

Ditto for my '03 Z4, '07 328i and '08 128i.

I have an '07 and mine also are extremely dusty within a couple of days. You could look for low brake dust aftermarket pads if it really bothers you.

Also, some members put wax on their wheels so it is easier to get the dust off when you clean your car.

What CNNSMS is saying is true. I have 2011 335i X-drive and have very little brake dust. I can go weeks on end without washing (I can get very busy you guys so don't shoot me) and still have little dust. My wife has 2012 GLK and now that produces lots of brake dust. After 3-4 days, I feel like washing all the wheels.

yeah mine too. When I had the OEM ones, had more brake dust that the AM I have now. But the AM are more noisy and dont like them. Next time I will avoid AM. I rather have brake dust than brake noise. Brake dust problem can dissapear by using a duster eveyday. yeah I do this.

there are three suppliers to bmw for brake pads, ate, jurid and textar. The amount of metallic content may vary from manufacturer which will affect the dusting.

The only pads that really control the black dusting or organic or ceramic compounds but they have very poor bite and are prone to fading.

I've read reports/reviews that the OEM pads are using a new formulation that doesn't dust nearly as bad as the old ones did.

Never heard about it going the other direction, though. Maybe you had the newer pad formulation adn your dealer/shop had older stock?

I've been reading up on pads and rotors since I need to replace mine soon. Ended up going with Centric High Carbon performance rotors and StopTech Street Performance pads. We'll see....

Brake dust is a huge issue on my wheels as well. I would go aftermarket if they provided the same braking power as OEM ones which I have yet to find.

You could go for Brembos or Stoptechs but they are $$$

Yep. I shopped around for quitre a bit and ended up putting everything together from Amazon (free shipping) and Turner for the parts I couldn't find on Amazon (rear pads, stainless steel lines).

I think they also have the same kit with just drilled rotors as well.

make sure to change the year/model of your car if you use the link - it was set to my 2007.

The Stoptech kit seems high when you can get Centric slotted and drill rotors for $75 a piece plus pads for $78 thats $225 an axle before the SS lines which add another $130 for a total of $350 before a 15% discount


this rotor the 125.34093 Have you installed it? Is it coated and painted (like black in center)

I used the 125.34079 for my e90 rear and love them

I also used the Hawk HPS pads and like the highly top chart good reviews low dust and pricing $78 shipped for front

I want my old brake pads back! After a week of driving my wheels were still spotless. I wax my wheels which helps, but these NEW pads the dealer installed are CRAZY DUSTY.

I want which ever manufacture made my old pads - almost ZERO dust and still good bite. I wonder how I can find that out...

might want to search the forums.... your honestly the first post in years to claim the factory pads are low dusting.... you sure your car isn't used and had an aftermarket pad installed when purchased?

Akebono pads are excellent for low-dust. I have them in the rear. I have a set for the front but the original just won't quit even at 70000 miles!

It was built in Germany to my specifications, so certainly not used. See above - another 2011 owner claiming the same thing. Whatever pads they threw on in Germany were fantastic.
