325d/330d
Hi all,
Not too long ago I posted on here asking for some buying advice for a 325d. At the time I was due to change jobs with a longer commute. That didn’t happen in the end. I ended up sticking with my petrol Audi but the itch for a powerful 6 cylinder diesel hasn’t gone just yet. My daily commute is ~10 miles each way of mainly city driving. Yearly mileage around 6000. I know diesel doesn’t make sense but I’m not tempted by the petrol E9x cars apart from the 335i which poses a problem for me in terms of insurance and then there’s the endless issues with them. I’ve been looking at N57 325d/330d cars. If I was to go ahead with one would the DPF get clogged in no time? That’s my biggest concern. Thoughts and advice appreciated. i have the N57 and my commute is 4 miles or so each way and its never had an DPF issues.
its remapped but EGR and DPF intact i use it for shops and stuff as well so it does get used more then just that. but down in cornwall there isnt any motorways and i rarely use the dual carriage way. hopefully that helps? the newer N57's seems better at regenning, just make sure your thermostats are okay and you don't have faults stored and you'll be good, well, i am.... |

you will still have to take it on a long steady drive now and again when the dpf regen light shows its head,,also the car will have to have good glow plugs and thermostats for this to happen

As long as you can get it on the motorway a couple of times a month for a longish drive (with no stress on the engine) to allow for the regeneration of the DPF, it should be OK.
But would still recommend a petrol.

i've never had that, but totally agree, any DPF car needs to have a working thermostat and no faults preventing a regen..... so be healthy really!

As Rasa says they only need to get up to 75 Deg c and above to do a regen, providing there are no other fault codes to stop the regen.
You don't have to rev the nuts off of it either. You just need to be able to do a minimum of a steady 1400 revs to get it started. Once it's started it won't stop if your revs drop below 1400 either it will carry on till the regent is finished. Blocked DPF's tend to happen more because of faults with the car rather than short trips. If you are reaching 82 degs on a long run regardless of the outside temps it does show you have a weak thermostat, while it will not stop the regen process it will get weaker and your engine temp will suffer as a result. I would get it changed before the winter as preventative maintenance. I would also do the EGR cooler thermostat too it's not expensive and is a 2 minuter job while you are doing the main stat. Oh and buy genuine from BMW, hardly any more expensive and won't fail after 6 months like the cheap pattern parts tend to. When I bought my 2009 lci 325d (M57 engine) I replaced both stats as it was only getting up to about 84 degs. Now it sits at 88 occasionally going up to 90 if pushing hard or queuing in traffic. Full DPF regen conditions:
Periodic regeneration is only enabled under the following conditions: - Fault codes 480A and 481A have the status "currently not present". - Engine temperature >75° C (normal operating temperature). - Exhaust-gas temperature upstream of the diesel particulate filter>240° C. - Sufficient fuel present (fuel reserve lamp is not lit). - Regeneration is aborted if the fuel reserve lamp lights up. - No fault code concerning air, exhaust gas, or sensors stored in the DDE. - A constant travelling speed above approx. approx. 38 mph; a travelling speed above approx. approx. 55 mph is ideal for regeneration. - The exhaust-gas temperature increases to above 600° C. - Successful regeneration takes place at an exhaust-gas temperature above 500° C. |

Thank you for the responses, very helpful.
I’ve seen a fair few 325d for sale, I was tempted by a lovely 2008 coupe but realised it was the older M57 engine. I’m guessing I should completely avoid? N57 325d’s are starting to come down in price now also but I’m not rushing anything at the moment. Is there anything else I should watch out for on these cars/engines? I’ve owned petrol VAG cars all my life so apologies for the newbie questions. |

m57 all day for me,,its a few n57 which have had timing chain probs,,but they are better for getting more power as its got same engine as the 330d,,whereas the m57 325d didnt,,it had different turbo etc.also all 335d came with the m57 engine..although with the air filter on the top like lci 330d cars

Glow plug modules tend to be quite a common failure. If it fails, you'll have a rough idle when starting from cold. After around 30 secs it will clear and idle as normal. This can also cause the glow plugs to fail as well. It's worth noting that if you have a glow plug and/or the module fail, this will prevent a regen from taking place so would need to be addressed.
Glow plug modules can be picked up on eBay for around £70 If you know where to look. I got a genuine Beru unit for that price from Lithuania! Bmw wanted £116 for the same one. They can also be fitted without removing the intake manifold. It's very fiddly but is possible. I got my mate to do mine - took him about 15-20 mins. However, I believe on the older M57 engines, the intake has to be removed, but I'm not sure on that one. Auto gearboxes are also worth servicing when they get to around 80-100k on the clock. The service kit is expensive but I've been told it's definitely a job well worth doing. It's on my to do list! Intake manifolds and the egr valve can get clogged, so taking this off and cleaning might be a good idea. I personally haven't done mine as I don't feel the need to yet. Mine is the 330d N57 and I had it mapped back in January, and when it was on the dyno everything was absolutely spot on - really nice smooth power and torque curves. So based on that I haven't bothered. I also had the egr mapped out so that it stays shut all the time now and thus should prevent any more clogging of the intake. |
