No Sport Mode

I recently bought a 2008 328i. When I bought the car I knew that the Sport Mode did not work and knew about the broken wire problem. I have fixed all the wires to the best of my ability.
I still don't have Sport Mode.
When I start the car and shift into D, I get M2 on the dash. No Sport Mode shifting. I can drive in D just fine.
Any ideas on what I can do next.

Not sure you arent in sport shift mode. But yeah, at first, it should show DS and then as you tap up or down itll change gears manually (M1,M2,M3,M4,etc)

...or are you saying you see M2 but never are able to switch up or down gears from there?

When I go down to D I see S2 on the dash. I move the shifter left and then right to see D on the dash.
If I forget to do this I am stuck in S2.
Up and down in Sport Mode changes nothing. Sport Mode is always S2.

When I am in Sport Mode I am stuck in M2. Any shifting, shift lever or paddles does nothing. I move the shifter to the right and see D on the dash and the car drives just fine.

You need a new BMW STEPTRONIC Shifter ASSEMBLY you should not try to repair the wiring inside the shifter you will short circuit damage your transmission.

Is replacing the Steptronic Shifter Assembly something a novice mechanic like myself can do? Are the instructions in the Haynes Repair Manual enough?

Unless your'08 is much different than my 'O7 328xi. Your tranny is made by GM and not ZF. Therefore, you will never see DS on your dash.
As you know, pulling the shift lever towards the left puts you in S mode. In order to get you car into M mode, you must already be in S mode and move the shift lever forward or backward and the M1, M2, etc. will appear.
If you turn your car off while the shift lever is towards the driver when you go to start it, the car will start in S mode. In order to get back to D mode, you must push the shifter lever towards the passenger.
