Explosion under hood....

So, I was driving in 80degree heat yesterday on a 40mile trip. First, the limp light comes on, then the low coolant light.
I stop and open the hood....it looked like mount st Helens exploding out of my coolant overflow screw. Steam poured out and shot coolant for about 20 min before subsiding.
I refilled it with coolant....anyone think it is just the overflow screw that is messed up? Other possibilities? I don't want to have to take off the jb4 just to have the deal look at it if I can fix it.
Thanks for the help.

I would flush your coolant and check the lines for a leak.

f you don't have a leak in your coolant system and your coolant comes out clean.. my guess is your waterpump is going. Your coolant basically just boiled over.

65k...I timeto look closer today... All of the coolant was leaking from the air/bleed screw on the expansion tank.

Went to the dealership, bought a new screw and was going to change it right in the lot, I touched the bleed screw with a screwdriver an the head of the acre fell off...(it's plastic)

Anyway, the tech took out old screw added new one and filled expansion tank. The SA said it is pretty common...but then he said you were a quart low on coolant and you may have toasted something?!? What!? the temp gauge was never over 240, doesn't the car shut down before it melts stuff!?!

I was happy to leave the dealership paying only 20 for labor and 7 for the screw...I didn't know I could go to the dealership and get a carwash for under 100.00.

My car over heated and went into limp mode then got the red radiator sign said shutdown immediately etc. The freaking oil temp never went over 245F the whole time! That was counter intuitive to what I expected. So yes, you can ove4rheat and melt stuff and your oil temp stays absolutely normal!

Don't risk it, get it thoroughly checked our cars have lots of aluminum in the engine, and overheating will result in a lot of damage you are not careful.

Does it matter that the limp mode and the low coolant light were yellow lights, not red??
