Will TPMS work with car that has FTM???
I have an '06 330i that's equipped with run-flats which uses FTM (valve stems are rubber). Planning on getting some rims but with non-run flat tires.
Question is, can I get the TPMS for the wheels & will the system be able to monitor the loss of tire pressure?? (since the car is originally equipped w/ FTM) |

You will have no use of the TPMS on a car with FTM.

Sooooo.... in that case, what can I use to monitor if I get a flat or lose tire pressure if I decide to go the non-run flat route?
Cuz won't the warning light pop-up on my dash saying I have a flat tire if there are no sensors? |

Your FTM will still be functional. It monitors your tire pressure via wheel rotation speed.

No, FTM monitors tire "pressure" through the ABS sensors. It detects change in rolling speed and diameter of the wheel, and warns you when there's a change. TPMS, on the other hand, is attached to each wheel and detects air pressure loss.
So basically, you don't need to do anything--even if you get non-RFTs--except reset the tire monitor each time you change wheels/tires. Hope that makes sense! You may want to check in the manual, I believe it explains it. Or search, there's a couple of other threads that explain the difference. |

No way to retrofit that I've seen, but your OE system will still work fine.

Digging up this super old thread because I might be buying a set of Canadian wheels/tires from another member from BC. I’m in Portland and we will meet in the middle in Seattle. My car is TPMS equipped and his is FTM. Will my car detect FTM or do I need to swap my TPMS sensors into the Canadian wheels? Thanks in advance.

FTM is just software that detects flat tires because of change in rolling diameter.
TPMS is hardware. Sensors/Tx in each tire, Rx in each wheel well, and a module to process it all. FTM is automatically enabled when you code out TPMS. TPMS could maybe be retrofitted, but that sounds like a lot of work for little benefit. FTM works great; USA pushed regulations to force TPMS. |
