A friend took mine to 243km/h or so....car wouldnt go any further. I say friend cause i dont have the cahonas with the new strict speeding laws. Bit disapointed to be honest...thought the limiter would be higher.

If he didn't 'bounce' off the limiter then the car is drag limited at 243km/h.

I doubt a twin turbo car (unless it's a tiny engine like those 3 cyl turbo fireflys) is drag limited to 243.

I'm pretty sure its RPM is limited to something in 6th gear, because I've seen pics with people doing 260 and pics with people doing 240 when their limiter kicked in. I guess it has to do with the conditions of the road and whether or not its windy.

The nice thing with hitting the limiter is that you have power all the way up, till you top out at 220 / 230 / 240, depending on the E9x model.

I remember on my IS300, top speed was drag limited... it was painfully slow getting through the last 20km/h.

I hit the limit on an Audi A4 1.9T (diesel) and I'll be honest, I was right at redline so I thought it was a rev limiter, but I'm not so sure..may have been drag. You see, the last 15km/h were pretty slow...it would top out at 230 km/h on flats, about 215-220km/h going up a slight incline, but then I hit 247ish km/h going down a hill. What do you guys think - rev limiter or drag given the varying speeds? I would be tempted to say drag?

btw - this was in Germany on the autobahn - I would never go that fast in Ontario.

Here's a pic (maybe...if it works..never attached a pic before).

Never even hit 6th gear....was waiting for fifth to red line before hitting 6th and it never happend. The speed was stuck at 243 or so and the rpm was also stuck around 5.5. Do you think I could have hit a higher speed in 6th? I doubt it.

250km/h

reasonably stable

the car is definitely capable of higher speeds

but I think you need to upgrade the tires/suspension to do it safely

then i guess maybe not in 6th. But since ur saying that the RPM didn't go higher than 5.5k, then it just proves my point that its rev limited to 5.5k in 5th, which would be i guess a bit lower in 6th.

Who took that picture? I hope it wasn't the driver. That would be very reckless.

man I envy you so much! I made the mistake of renting a low end Ford Focus when I was in Germany last week....and let me tell you, I was struggling to hit 140-160km/hr on the autobahn. Meanwhile all these BMW's, Audi's, Porsche's and Ferrari's were blowing past me like I was standing still

Oh well next time I'll rent something with more power

There is no correlation between power and drag.

Drag is about physics and aerodynamics and not about what engine you have. You could drag limit a Veyron or a 997tt to 150 mph if you wanted to.

My '01 IS300 topped out at about 215 km/h... but after about 200, it accelerated so slowly, you could almost see it go up a tick at a time. At that point, you had to be 100% focused on the car, it wasn't very stable.

The 330i goes all the way up to about 230km/h with no hesitation, and is super stable. Doesn't feel any different than 149km/h.

Markymarc...you don't want to know...

Actually, I admit, it was reckless. I was a bit younger, definitely stupider, but its not like I looked through the lens or display when I was taking that picture. I just had the camera in the front seat, took one hand off the wheel (hence the reckless part) and started snapping pictures at various angles..this was the only one that turned out well. There were others, but they showed thumbs or no speedo or no RPM gauge...this pic is perfect! FYI, no others around me to crash into just so you know.

I hit 240 km/h in my 96 740iL, overseas with two passengers, on a highway bend. It downshifted at 230 and I heard the sound of god as it skyrocketed to 240. Didn't hit the limiter though.
