Im skeptical, because I think he will be putting the old chip on a new board, but I think the chip is somehow damaged, as the car recognizes a key in the ignition, but will not start

Tell us how it goes.
And how much trouble it was to get your CAS out. you might want to get one of those plastic keys and phony fob to. GcodingBMW I assume Also you may find these links useful in navigating this forum. http://www.e90post.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=16 http://www.e90post.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=378 Last edited by ctuna; 07-11-2018 at 11:57 PM.. |

It is three torx T-20 screws to remove the driver's kick panel. Then take a ratcheting 10mm wrench and unscrew the worlds longest bolt holding the CAS in. It is the large white or black box. Do not use anything else other than a ratcheting wrench. |

I have accidentally put my keys through the wash and had no issues, is that normal or did I get lucky

Wouldn't mind a plastic key with the chip. I think two working fobs should be sufficient. I plan to hide the fob in the car, and take the metal key with me in risky situations. Should always take the spare fob when out of town. I would prefer a simpler start system, but I think BMW provided a fair amount of redundancy, and I need to provide the rest |

Surfer's key is water proof.
The fob may still activate the car with the key removed. If you want to make sure it won't put in a a mentos box or other metal box that makes a Faraday cage. |

Im not too worried about the fob being in the car (non CA). Just need to hide it well. Metal key on a lanyard will get me back in. I just dont want to pay for a "surfer key" if I dont have too. Im a skater anyway

Why is it so stupid expensive for a spare key? I only have ONE key because that's all I got from the previous owner, and I'd like to have a spare. Are there any other options besides $300 from the dealer, or $100 for the plastic key?

Try to find a locksmith that will make a BMW key for around $200 or buy a $800 tool and make as many keys as you want.
