TCU coding question

posting here since it's more active then the e83 forum but it should apply since both use a tcu.

i have a 08 x3 and water came in thru the sunroom drain and killed the
tcu combox part number 84109195455.

i can't find any another used tcu with the same part number.

Could i switch and add a different part number one and code it in?

or does it have to be the same part number.

Thanks

I don't know the answer to your question but do you have the USB option? If so, you can do a little rewiring and code mulf to enable BT phone. It won't be SOS/assist but that no longer works anyway.

you should look for any tcu without word "MOST" on it but it is better if its manufacturing day will be close your x3 model year
also you can look if seller sells tcu from e53 or e83

Since you can't match the part number, the next best way is to get a similar TCU from an 08 or 09 X3. I am using X5 parts in my E90 and they work fine once coded.

Another option is to just replace the TCU with a MULF2 Hi. It will get you USB which you can use with a tune2air to add BT music. Used TCU and MULF are similar in price.

TCU and MULF from E70 or E90 will not work with E83 X3 because it's headunit platform is old, same as in e53, e46, e85 and e39, e38

No point in hunting for a replacement TCU. The only reason for having a TCU is BMW Assist. The cell radio in that module is no longer support by BMW. Just swap/code in a MULF module (you keep bluetooth/usb, or in your case may be upgrading to usb).

there is "NO" MULF for e83 x3, only ULF, and in that case TCU will be better and newer and will better work with bluetooth phones

OK got it. There is no MULF for 06 E90 either but I was able to add one to mine by replacing the radio for $50.

you do not want to see that TS asking about E83, it is not same as e90 or e60, but similar to old bmw line (e46, e39, e53)

It doesn't matter what worked for your 2006 E90, the systems used in the E83 canbus are entirely different than our E90s. It's a whole generation of technology apart.

the number you specified is latest TCU for you headunit
since you cannot find used one yo may consider

https://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-02-08-B...itleDesc=0%7C0

or

https://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-84-11-6...itleDesc=0%7C0

but if you plan it to use with latest phones via bluetooth and use phonebook on display then you may consider latest european analog because BMW Assist service should be deactivated for old network used in E83 and there should not be differences between US and EU units
