Part out or sell?

I will most likely finally be replacing the 35i sometime during March or April with either a G30 40i touring or an X5.

Mrs Chapers thinks we should keep the 35i as a 'fun' car & just use it occasionally but I'm not so sure, we'd still have to tax, insure, maintain & fix it when it goes wrong.

If I was to sell obviously I'd like to get as much as I can back on the 35i, which is a 2006 e92 auto SE in silver with 122,000 miles which I've owned for over eight & a half years.

Am now thinking how much are the parts worth & how much could I get if I parted it.I

Not sure what the bits are worth, as I haven't bothered to do any research but have made a list below of the 'main' bits with my guestimated values & am already at more than I would get for it as a whole car, what do you guys think.

NOTE, this isn't a part out thread, am only curious and a bit bored

Well maintained N54 engine with no oil leaks...£1,200?

Genuine Mitsubishi tubs with approx 15,000 miles on them..£900?

Auto gearbox..£600?

Brakes, ate front discs with less than 5,000 miles, Brembo ceramic front pads, red stuff ceramic rear pads. All sold as a kit...£400?

PS4S tyres, fronts less than 2,000 miles...£250 for the pair?
Rears approx 6,000 miles...£200 the pair?

Style 230 twist alloys..£400?

Interior, black leather heated memory....£500?

Door & rear cards..£100?

CIC system complete...£600?

Diff..£300?

pair xenon headlights...£400?

Mishimoto intercooler...£250?

I've thought about this a few times with breaking mine if I ever decided I want to but I always come back to the same thing. I just love the car too much. I actually agree with your wife and keep it.
As you've already said the engine is strong and not leaking as well the rest of the car has been well maintained.
Winter months just SORN it so save the tax, MOT is only once a year and tbh with a hugely reduced mileage you'll find it won't cost as much in maintenance for MOTs and general wear and tear. Plus limited mileage means insurance is heavily reduced too.
Suppose the only thing is if you have somewhere to park it out the elements as that's the only thing that could cause adverse wear on the underside etc.
Also, some of the prices you have are achievable but also will depend on the market at the time you decide to part it. So interior for example might not achieve £500 and most might want doorcards as part of the deal too as a complete interior, just as an example.

Cheers Raj, we will be moving to somewhere with more outside space later this year so building a bigger garage is definitely on the cards, so keeping it could be an option.

Yeah I agree with you on the interior.
There's a lot of parts that I hadn't listed though, am
curious as to how much money it'd fetch after everything was sold. I suspect it'd be close to double what I could sell the whole car for.

Agree stripping her will definitely realise a larger grand total than selling the car as a whole.

I guess it depends if you like the car enough (and you have owned for quite sometime) that you'd prefer to keep her to enjoy on this odd occasions or better off getting rid.

It would be a shame to strip the old girl, if I can't pass the 35i onto a good home I may well just hang on to it, especially if I can build myself that big ole garage

Having somewhere to keep what would become a third vehicle has always been the issue, if I'd had somewhere to keep the old e36 I would never had pxd it against the 35i & although I don't feel quite as fond of the e92 as I did of the e36 if I sold the 35i I would miss it.

I'd get building lol. That's what I did and hence still have my 3er as the 3rd car and toy. Also means you can go a little further with her too in your spare time and mod her more as you have a daily to use for normal chores.

Raj, you are a very bad man I am now thinking my new garage/workshop/manspace must have a pitched roof & be large enough to accommodate a car lift....hmmm.

I certainly am

You know it makes sense though lol. Plus you can keep the new car stock as you still have the 35i for that modding fix.

I'm looking to get an X5 (E70) as well because I'll be needing the extra seats pretty soon! But.. I love my e90 330d, it can be nearly 15 years old but it still looks and sounds so nice, my dad is on Motability and he said himself, he loves the brand new cars.. But no matter how new and pretty they are, the 330d is a beast and puts a smile on your face haha.

So, I'm like you really, I should in theory strip and sell but I'd love to keep both, I'm not sure what will happen yet but one thing worth mentioning is the insurance company "by miles".. You pay an upfront cost to insure the car "parked", but going from there you only pay for the miles you drive, do 0 pay nothing, do 10 miles in the year pay for 10 its a win win for situations like yours.

Interesting with that insurance company. Never heard of them but will take a look as I do little mileage in all 3 motors now and still pay the yearly premium for the 3er to be sat in the garage most of the timelol.
