2010 E90 320D ED Electric 'Active Steering' Issues

Hello,

I've recently been experiencing some trouble with my electric active steering on my 2010 320d ED.

Nearly every time I drive my car, a little symbol comes up with a steering wheel and exclamation mark, when this happens, the steering wheel wobbles by itself left to right and steering feels a bit tighter. Probably one in every 4 times this happens, the active steering is completely gone, like it's a full on arm workout to get it off my driveway, I usually turn the engine off and back on and it's back to the slightly harder steering and wobbly wheel, which is much more tolerable.

Has anybody else experience anything like this, and how did you diagnose/fix it? I have it booked into a garage next week but I wanted to see if I could get it fixed before that to save money. I have no other lights on the dash like some other users describe (ABS lights ect).

Thanks in advance!

Edit: I have also tried doing the steering wheel left-right thing to calibrate the sensor. This worked the first time briefly but not since.

Have you checked steering fluid level?
Try doing the left to right turn of the wheel 5x with the steering fluid reservoir cap removed.

How old is your battery? Sounds like a voltage drop.

Sorry it took so long to get back I've been very busy and haven't had time for the car. The battery is about a year old and voltage readings all look okay.
