Gauges ping, car slams on brakes.
So this is definitely by far the weirdest issue I’ve ever had in any car that I’ve owned. I bought my 335i in april and it seems every month I appear to have a new severe issue. It’s gotten to the point where my transmission going out is a LOW priority...
Anyways I’ll get to it. Basically what is going on is when I’m WOT and I hit around 6krpm, the car SLAMS on the brakes momentarily (maybe for a second or so) and all the gauges in the cluster “ping”. There is no jb4 installed. It’s a very discomforting, scary feeling. I also noticed if you attempt to redline in park the gauges will do the same thing. One day out of pure frustration I kept on redlining ignoring the gauges pinging in a desparate attempt to get a clue at what was going on and if it blows it up it blows up...? At about 3-4 seconds of revving I finally got a dsc malfunction. Immediately went away. When I grabbed a code in INPA it was all in german and when ai translates the description it made no sense. I will try to find the code but when i googled it nothing relevant to the DSC came up. Here is a video of what is going on while in park. This is while in drive. Here is what I’ve tried so far: Disconnect ABS module Disble DSC/DCT Shift in Manual Mode Replaced throttle body (had an implausability code) Replaced Alternator with a bosch Tried different battery Have had 1 mosfet replaced few days ago (problem oddly stopped a day before the mosfet failed) Trans has new solenoids gaskets fluid filter Ground cabele is intact. Hooked the car up to a jump just to test possibility of voltage drop Speaking of voltage drop, voltage drops to about 11-12 right when it happens. Probably not relevant but car is MHD stage 1. I vaguely remember a throttle setting in there but it was fine for months after flashing. This has been going on for about half a year. I posted in an N54 group and nobody there can seem to know what’s going on. Pls help. The others are trying to convince me to get an LS... Last edited by byte[]; 12-19-2019 at 05:56 AM.. |

Could be an indication of the HPFP starting to die if it is in fact a fuel cut

Take some logs with MHD, upload it to datazap(.)me and I'll take a look at them

When I first experienced fuel cutoff, it did feel like the brakes were on, but in reality it is engine braking you feel.
If you can monitor and record fuel pressure, you'll know if you're reaching fuel cutoff. That said, do, and think, as you please. |

Your car isn’t hitting the brakes.
Idk wtf “pinging” gauges mean, even after watching your video. What you’re experiencing is a fuel cut. You believe it’s brakes because it’s quite an abrupt feeling to go from +240hp to zero rapidly. The best course, as suggested here with clarity, is to take a log of the occurrence with as many parameters enabled as possible. You’re getting a drivetrain malfunction when driving the car hard and you’re choosing to ignore diagnosing it. Also, what are you using your oil gauge for? It’s moving as well. |
