Why Runflats are good

Guy here that works for a auto accesories shop was flying down the freeway in their almost new VW Golf 5 GTi

Suddenly the rear tire blows

They skid into the on comming traffic lane
Then Spin 3 times and come to a halt on the grass next to the freeway

Luckly the road was almost empty and they didnt hit anything

With runflats, all that would have happened was a flat tire warning and he could have slowed down and continued on safely

If they weren't so damn loud, I think I would like them a lot better.

Nice to know something like this wouldn't happen on them though.

Hate to say it, but it looks to me like he blew the tire because it had rubbed and fatigued.

any word on why it popped like that?

I wonder how that tire was maintained?

you usually see tires go down gradually, rather than have a catostrophic failure like that

there one thing that we need to bring about again about runflats, folks with it should periodically check its pressure. Bcoz it will deceive you all that time if you are on low pressure since it will not lay flat like the regular tire.

Visually inspection is a NO! NO! Tire pressure gauge is the only way, and most folks if they have low tire pressure wont even know it and thereby using up the limited miles that the tire can be run on its sidewall, thereby a blowout!

look at the marks on the A arm in the 3rd pic

I wonder if the offset was correct on those aftermarket wheels, maybe the inside wall was rubbing on the A arm

Our speed limit is 120Km per hour ( 75 Miles per hour )

Blowout would have been close to that speed, may be slightly above

Wheels are correct size and offset
Tires were apparently few months old and wernt rubbing

Marks in A Arm are from after the tire blew

I have seen many blow like that

Just yesterday 8 people were killed not far from my house on the freeway when the minibus they were in blew a tire and it fliped multiple times.

They very often blow like taht from hitting something in the road
Usually something you hardly see, like a bolt or nut

it just seems odd, usually for a tire to go like that the driver has driven for some distance after loosing pressure, then it goes big

you're right though, RFT would have saved quite a bit of worrying for quite a few people involved in that, glad everyone was OK

Yes

Thanks to the EH2 hump on the rim, the sidewalls should not seperate in a blowout.

Thats why its so hard for them to change the tires

Two weeks ago I had my first flat on the freeway and thankfully for run flats I was able to continue a 10 mile drive on the freeway back home, the only thing is like someone mentioned they are hard to find. I live in a big city and it took discount tire 3 days to get the tire in, but heck for $178 installed it was the cheapest tire I have had on a car.

I hate to be negative. But the likelyness of this happening is probably very low. I know it is one plus that helps, but it still sucks having them.

Oh well, hope the guy was alrite. Nice VeeDub.

Not really

Friend who was a emergency medic ( stoped because he coulnt take it anymore ), said they saw a blowout related injury/death at least once a week

He forced his entire family to change to cars with runflats.

That is one person you know. I am not saying you are wrong. But as a whole if it were as bad as that, I would assume there would be an outcry by the public. I drive on the highway quite a bit, very rarely see blowouts like that.

I am sure that RFT can save lifes. Try changing a tire on an urban high-speed highway. I did and wasn't sure to survive.
