So I bought these
https://www.menards.com/main/hardwar...766&ipos=1 I drilled 1/4" hole, which is a little "too small" then used a heat gun and tapped them in with a hammer. Once the plastic cooled, the were set. No glue mess. I think the hardware looks better too! |

Looks good to me. I went with the same hex head as original partly to not confuse anyone working on my car in future (like I ever let anyone anyway) and partly so you can use the same bit to take off the six micro-filter bolts and then the two for the cowl in one go. |

If anyone is still reading this thread, I recently took Bimmer305's advice and used this method and it worked like a charm. That being said, I now am the proud owner of 19 brass inserts and 94 screws. If anyone is looking to do this DIY I'd be more than happy to discuss sending them on a first come first serve basis if you cover the shipping.

Anyone know of one that works with the new type of thread on the new bolts? One of them is now stripped even with new bolts.
EDIT: JB weld with the new BMW screws worked perfectly. Last edited by TheMidnightNarwhal; 02-12-2020 at 10:37 AM.. |

Anyone has a set for sell to someone in Canada or knows where to get them here. The epoxy trick isn't working at all for the screw holes that are on the actual cowl (not the windshield).

Anyone find stainless HWH screws that work here, or should I just buy separate screws and washers? gonna have to order some because I went to R&R my filter today and one of the brass inserts pulled out of the cowl, and another I had to rip out of the cover. yep screw all rusty. Only did the fix 7-8 years ago LOL
Edit: this looks like it might work https://www.belmetric.com/m5x08-flan...el-p-5483.html Probably going to order some of these and some replacement brass inserts (and hope that JB-weld or whatever holds them in) unless someone has a source for both in one order. or does anyone still have the original McMaster brass inserts and can put a couple in an envelope for me? Update: the Bel Metric stainless screws work fine, except I didn't pull the lower piece of the filter housing so that insert spun (JB weld didn't cure in these temps I guess)
unfortunately all the plastic is succumbing to old German plastic disease, broke two clips just changing my spark plugs |
