CIC UPDATE on 2011 Alpina D3 Biturbo E91
Hi Im trying to update the CIC on my 2011 Alpina D3 Biturbo E91 as when I connect via bluetooth to my Samsung S8+ no song data or DAB data is shown on the screen, although strangely a couple of times it has?
I've downloaded UPD01008.bin to a FAT32 formatted memory stick and plugged it into the USB drive in my glovebox as I don't have one under the armrest, just an AUX port and cigarette lighter. I've gone into settings but software update does not appear. I've noticed that if I go into BMW Services>Service Status>Update BMW Services and go back into Settings, software update appears but won't actually let me start the update. Once the BMW Services Update has finished the software update option disappears in the settings menu Nearly all instructions say to use the armrest USB but as I dont have one there is there an alternative way? Any ideas please? Cheers |

Have you checked to see if you have a Combox?
If not, which is likely, you cannot stream music over Bluetooth. The .bin file does not upgrade the CIC, it merely updates the USB recognition tables so that the USB interface (mulf?) knows how to talk to newer devices. |

Hi opjose, the Bluetooth works absolutely fine as, far, as listening to music and telephone calls etc it's just the data foe each album, song, dab radio station isn't present. I just get an unknown displayed on the screen. How do i check for a combox please?

The screen shows teleservices update. I think that is an over the air update and not a USB one. In the US, older tele-services devices no longer connect to the servers as they are obsolete. You may want to try to disconnect the bluetooth devices and see if you can get that one to kick off.
A combox will be in the trunk under the floor cover close to rear seat edge. Post pictures of what you find including the connectors. I am curious if anything is plugged into the round USB connector |

Having checked it seems my usb ports aren't being used on the combox, am I able to simply buy an aux/usb socket and connect to the combox (I think using a Fakra HSD Z to B Female Decar 353 cable) and install the update that way?
Thanks |

There is a slight chance something is disabled on the combox and needs coding to be enabled. Just to be clear, UPD01008.bin is not a CIC update. It is a combox update that is only for external devices. Before you buy wiring, see what version you are on now. This is a one time update and there probably will not be any future updates. The below picture is what the current update looks like. |

This is part of the problem, when I go into settings, I don't always get the option to for software? I only get it when I set the BMW Services Update away and when I go into settings the software version comes up as this......

Neither of the USB ports on your Combox are plugged into anything. Normally one of the connectors hooks up to the center console interface and Aux connector.
As mentioned the update you are trying to install is for the Combox not the CIC. You may want to post the last seven digits of your VIN number so we can see what hardware is installed in your car. |

So if this updates the combox is there a way/need to update the CIC or is that not possible?
And should this combox update resolve the original problem that I have ie no data is being displayed like dab radio station name, song title etc when connected via Bluetooth? Vin no is A926611 Thanks |

DAB radio station name could be related to the CIC. There is a setting to turn it on or off so check that. To get that firmware updated, you need an ICOM fiber interface. Or just pay your dealer to do it. The dealer can read your key and view what firmware your car has for no cost.
Combox update is mostly for bluetooth connectivity. I am not sure if it affects song titles. Do any apps display song titles? Since the cable is cheap, it is low risk. Try plugging in a USB and see if you can run the update. It is odd that it only shows telephone and not multimedia. |

Sorry, I should mention that I listen to Dab radio from my phone via Bluetooth, I don't have Dab in the car and I don't have any settings for displaying names either. As per my op I do very occasionally get a Dab radio station name/album name etc displayed so I know it can do it!
Yes, I agree that the USB cable would probably be the easiest option at the moment. I'm going to order this as it's cheap and will be here next week: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F233084202970 Thanks for your help |

It merely updates the Bluetooth recognition tables which could fix your original problem if communication with the Combox is working properly. To install the .bin file however, you must have a USB connection via the missing black port connection. As previously mentioned firmware updates are done either via an iLevel update or via Icom. That is completely different. You should be seeing the multimedia stuff in CIC. |

OK so I've plugged a USB connector into both the black and blue ports on the Combox but it's not showing up at all in my multimedia screens nor am I getting an option to do an update through my settings screen when I plug the USB stick with the bin file on in? I've tried plugging my phone into the new USB connector and it does charge my phone so pwer is getting through. Any ideas please?

Thanks smassey321, these are the steps that I have followed so I think my Combox may need coding which I have no idea on how to go about the coding that you mentioned (but thanks again!)
When I plug the USB connector into the Combox should I be able to see it as an external device in my multimedia? Thanks |
