How hard it it to fix?
Quote:
Is this hard to fix if I have someone who is very mechanically inclined do it? The car is not under warranty and I am worried about the cost to fix if I take it three hours away to the closest dealer. |

This sounds familiar.
I bough a used 07 BMW 328xi coupe with 290k on the odo. Very clean and functions perfectly. Some weeks ago it started to exhibit a problem resembles a battery terminal loosing contact. The last time it does this the whole power went off, as i slide the drivers seat to asses the back seat, the power suddenly comes back on. As at now the power is off again and the car is locked. I couldn't open the cabin or boot to asses the battery and check for possible corrosion at the battery terminals. Bought the car with key fob only, so no power no asses to boot.

There should be a key inside the key fob, look at the key ring end, press down in the middle and the key should slide out. then you can use that key to open the trunk and check the battery.

I just had this problem on my 2006 325i. Electrical system started acting out (random warning lights when turning the car on) and then the car died completely about 2 weeks later, just before I was scheduled to bring it into the shop. It is now fixed and working.
If you had this same problem, were there any more problems after that? Anything you might thing could be related or been affected by the initial problem? My car has low mileage (for its age), but since it's now 10 years old, I am starting to wonder whether it's time to start thinking about a new(er) one... Thanks |

Hey guys I'm just going through this problem at the minute, driving me insane, I have another thread on this and glad a stumbled across this one, almost certain the more I research this is what is happening to my 320i 2007, rang BMW and no recalls on it, so my mechanic is going to dig deeper to find the issue, just for reference does anybody know the time scale this job takes to carry out and whether the dash has to be removed? This would help massively. Thanks

Haven't worked on e90 sedan, but I did on e39, e53, e83 and e92 running cables and wires. These cars are pretty similar, flavor differences only. I don't think you need to remove the dash.
What needs be removed, I think are as follows: from front to back: You have to expose the firewall - might need to take the glovebox out (not difficult). Remove the front passenger seat, the carpeting cover that goes up towards "A" pillar, both door sills, "B" pillar covering, rear seat then fold carpet to access the wiring. There should be a hole under the rear seat where the wiring loom is routed in the trunk. Have a few spare plastic clips. The ones that attach the door sills and A & B pillar coverings can break. This can be time consuming if done first time, and also plastic clips will break.

Ran into this problem twice with my 2007 335...completely dead when I tried to start it. Ended up taking the handle of the screw driver from the trunk and tapping on the terminal connectors and the trunk lights came back on. Went in to start the car and everything was fine. I'm assuming it's cables loosening over time as these two events happened months apart.

I'm having the same problem.
In the middle of driving, the traction control and active steering lights and sometimes the TPM light, go off as well as the RPM guage dipping them jumping back up. Then when I kill the engine, the car shuts down pretty abruptly, usually leaving the key fob stuck in the slot. So I use the key in the fob to open the trunk, and usually, once I touch the distribution box and jiggle one of the main cables, the car turns on again - radio, interior lights, etc. and all the error lights are gone. This happens multiple times a week, so while I dont have the time to get it fixed, i find myself jiggling the cables in the trunk before I start the car, and it seems to have helped. Is this what most of you are experiencing as well? Last edited by eNinety650; 03-28-2017 at 04:41 PM.. |

Your issue sounds more like the IBS (intelligent battery sensor) to me. |
