thinking about going from sti to 335i - advice needed

hey guys.. let me say im a huge auto fan.. just like everyone else here im sure.. im 26, i have a moded 04 STI which i love.. my other car is a 03 acura rsx type s.. so as you can see ive been a "jap" car lover.. now maybe its time to go german.. i work all the time cause i like my toys and now im thinking about taking a big step to the 335i..
i test drove a coupe auto a few weeks ago.. man im in love.. SMOOTH, FAST, AND RESPONSIVE is how i would describe it.. i have never owned an auto, and didnt plan too but this auto is nice.. if i got one, however, i probably would go with a manual.. and i wouldnt waste anytime to do a computer upgrade (either vishnu or evotech not sure which one).. im a big believer in upgrading the ecu when doing mods.. the car in general is just sexy..
but it is a $40k+ plus car.. a lot more than my $30k+ subaru.. im not saying it isnt worth it but i just need to convince myself enough to sell my cars and put some money down on one.. besides my car is fast and handles awesome.. but its not an inline 6 twin turbo bimmer is it..??
anyways, please give me any advise, opinions or anything you would like to throw out as to why i would get rid of my sti and get the 335i.. also im in upper east TN and there is a local dealer (rick hill imports) but they told me that they would not go lower than sticker and i find that hard to believe.. so any other dealers i could go to and get a better deal? i would drive as far as charlotte if i needed to.. which i just read of a dealer there that gives good deals on these.. also i wouldnt car to get a used one.. i really prefer that but i guess since they are so new its hard to find one.. also ive heard that the insurance would be lower since its not listed as a high risk vehicle like my sti is.. is this so??
thanks :rocks:

I would but mainly because I like sport & luxury. The STI is a rally car, not something I would own (no offense). I would definitely go with the 335.

Ps- if you need convincing, then maybe you're just not ready for it yet.

sport and luxury, i guess you hit the nail on the head. the sti is all about sport, especially for a 4 "banger", its pretty impressive.. very fun to drive.. but when my cheeks touched the seats for a 335i for the first time i was hooked..
i thing i dont know a whole lot about is what is the mod world of the 335i like? another words are there a lot of mods available and how does that affect the ecu, warranty, performance etc??

as with any car- you would have to do your own research to see if a mod will void the warranty. The 335 is easier to tune than the rest of the BMW line up cus it has turbo (do a search for XEDE).

I guess it's safe to say that there's more potential for Japanese cars than there is for German cars. Not to mention that German parts cost more too. I dont know how fast you want your car to be because a Xede-equipped 335 is already a beast. If you're gonna spend a boatload of money on mods, you might want to think about getting the new M3/

im very familiar with xede.. vishnu makes some stuff for my sti.. ive also read about the xede on here for the 335i..
its a car i would really like to have, i would sell my sti for it also.. i guess its just a matter of if i wanna fork out that kind of cash..

Get rid of the subaru...I thought it would have been the toughest thing in the world to do, but I ended up doing it and now i'm anxiously waiting for the E92 to come in.

My WRX was pretty heavily modded (see pic below) but I think in the end i'll still be happier with the 335

The WRX is fun, but coming from 3 BMW's previously, i've always known that i'd want to get back into a BMW eventually.

wow, nice rex.. basicly i have 2 cars.. a 2003 rsx type s and a 2004 STi.. i need to sell both. one goes towards some debt the other towards a new car.. i like the idea of getting a used car, simply cause you can get a better deal.. ya it may have a couple of thousand miles on it but thats no big deal to me.. so i may wait till mid 07. or if things work out for me i may get a new one within the next couple of months. dont know yet..

I'd forget the 335, because you said your STi is an '04 and modded. Sure, I think the 335 is nicer, but I'd rather have 2 cars (the subie and acura) than one 335. Why get rid of a STi that's 2-3 yrs. old? You haven't reached the sweet spot for upgrading. Enjoy the STi for at least another 2-6 yrs. and then upgrade. my .02.

just remember this is bmw's first year production for this engine, and first year production for a forced induction engine with not just one, but two turbos. if you are planning to mod then make sure you take this advice with a grain of salt and be very careful.

well im not going to forget about the 335i.. i normally get a new car every 2 years or so.. i dont know what it is, i just get the bug but the acura needs to go no matter what.. its a nice car but i dont need it.. the subie will need to go if i get the bmw..
the only problem about taking my sti to the next step is i would need to upgrade everything: turbo kit, fmic, injectors, fuel system upgrade, clutch, custom tune and other misc stuff that im forgeting.. cause once you do one thing you gotta do the other.. so to do it all right im looking at around $5000 +.. now i would have a daily driven 400 whp beast that as long as nothing goes wrong will last me for a long time.. but i will NEVER get my money back, i would only get a fraction of it when i decide to part everything and sell the car.. so ya i would have fun while i had it but i consider that a waste..
now if i got a car like the 335i i get a nice inline 6 twin turbo with loads of potential, a simple ecu upgrade will bring up the whp considerably, buckets of luxuary and if/when i got rid of the car i could get a lot of money back cause the bmw's really keep their re-sale value and i wouldnt be in the hole soo much due to mods..

with it being so new is a concern of mine.. ive read where a few people have had problems with their cars already.. but i do understand that it can happen to any car.. i normally dont go for new design/production cars but i would/do consider the new 335i an exception..
if i get the car i do plan on doing some mods.. but nothing extreme.. probably and ecu upgrade of some sort and maybe an exhaust upgrade.. thats really it.. i know once you get into turbo upgrading then you have opened a whole new book.. its like a chain reaction, once you do one upgrade you have to do another.. and i dont short cut on anything..

the only other comparison is performance of the 2 cars (sti & 335i) that im considering.. my sti put down 307 whp and 347tq on a dyno jet.. that is with intake, header, tbe and a re-flashed ecu.. not bad.. im pleased with it.. now i know the 335i has a lot of potential to putting down some horsepower with just an ecu upgrade.. i also know that the horsepower numbers are just numbers and has a small role on how fast a car is.. you have to consider a couple of things:
power to weight ratio (i think this is the big one)
drivetrain (gearing, tranny, traction etc)
driver

so im not taking performance between these 2 cars into consideration too much because i think they are probably pretty close.. but as with all car enthusiasts it is somthing you think about all the time..

now my only other decision is coupe or sedan, manual or automatic...???
how much does the performance of the 2 differ?

coupe or sedan is personal preference, but don't go for an Auto...coming from those 2 cars you will hate driving an auto tranny

stick with the 6 speed, BMW's have nice gearboxes

the one i test drove was an auto.. and i gotta say, i really liked it.. i mean it dont compare to a 6 speed BUT, for all the auto's ive driven it was nice..
you can get the sedan in a manual, right?
i guess the only diffirence between the coupe and sedan is a little more weight?

Yes you can get the sedan with 6MT. It's the standard tranny and the Steptronic is an option at $1275 list. If you order the Auto (Steptronic) with the Sport Package you get paddle shifters for the SMG for another $100 list. I've driven a couple of SMG paddle shift equipped BMW's and I still prefer the stick. That is entirely a personal choice though.

Whitson,

Since I own similar cars(Evo 8 and Evo9 among other cars) I can give you a fair idea, I also driven STIs and I myself had a very modded WRX 3 years ago. I highly suggest changing your STI for the 335I.

I went for as test drive today on a sedan 335 auto and the cars impressed me a lot, it was fast the whole time even though I was riding with 2 other people and we had the A/C on.

The BMW 335I is a much nicer ride, the STI might outhandle the 335I by a small marging and what not but believe me, this BMW is worth having.

Your dyno numbers are OK, not bad at all but the 335I has a lot of potential. I suggest you get it.

My .2c

Carlos

i wouldn't do it because i'm in love with rally cars and the STi but i do love my E90 a lot. the overall i can take this and have fun on the mountain road AND cruise when i feel like it is a very nice luxury. The car isn't especially luxurious inside but it's a huge upgrade if your'e coming from the STi.

btw why not trade in the RSX then? the STi is too precious to give up!
