Won't you just blind the shite out of other drivers and be liable for any major motor vehicle accident within a 500 foot radius if it's too bright?
We're talking about reverse lights. I hope there's no one behind me driving when I'm trying to back up.

+1 - reverse lights are only on for a short time to help you see where you are backing up. With that amount of light, and distance from that car a person would be standing, there would be no chance of damaging someones eyes. As the light spreads out the intensity of the light get dimmer. In the picture below see the "Flux" area. as light spreads it becomes dimmer

Also, on a separate note, people who put HID bulbs in halogen headlights are doing the same thing. They are putting a 3000 lumen bulb in an area designed for 700 lumen, and most of that light is being scattered into oncoming traffic's eyes.

Cool

OK, for those who asked for pictures...you shall receive. The Pictures from the install!

Now for the brightness pictures, those are incredibly subjective and they very from monitor to monitor. I was using a DSLR and I didn't want to overexpose the pictures to give people any false impressions, so I'll explain how I metered each picture.

TAKE NOTE that all of these pictures were taken around 11AM on an overcast--but bright--day.

Picture 1: These are the bulbs themselves

The Bulbs by RobStone, on Flickr

Picture 2: This is the housing with the light off. If you'll notice, you see a yellowish hue through about 2/3 of the housing extending left and right. That is the reflection from the yellow on the LEDs, so clearly the 9 LED bulb is reflecting a fairly large amount of light outwards.

The Housing - Off by RobStone, on Flickr

Picture 3: This is the light on with the camera exposed to the center of the reverse housing, take note that the light fills the housing, and it is brighter than the tail lights.

The Housing - On by RobStone, on Flickr

Picture 4: This was taken with the camera exposed to the reverse housing, notice that it is still bright even though I was standing on an angle to it.

Tail Light - Off center by RobStone, on Flickr

Picture 5: I hoped this would help deal with the subjectiveness of these kinds of pictures. I held a piece of paper up against the tail light (but as you can see in the picture, it wasn't laying flat towards the right side of the reverse housing), and exposed it to the center of the page. As you can see, the reverse LED is brighter than the tail lights.

Paper Test by RobStone, on Flickr

Hope these pictures help!

The brightness whoring of me is saying "try this", while the electrical engineering side of me is saying "its not a canbus bulb", while the logic side is saying "sketchy imported bulb = bad"...but I still want to try it.
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/5w-12v-...ulb-pair-48178
I wonder how hard it is to make a bulb Canbus complient. Because comparing the 9 LED bulbs I have in now to that 68 LED bulb is pretty much like comparing a pea shooter to an anti tank rocket.

Perhaps the most interesting thing on that page is this user submitted picture:
http://www.dealextreme.com/customerp...eb968c648b.jpg
Notice the 9 LED bulb on the bottom right that looks a heck of a lot like the AutoLumation bulb compared to the DX bulb directly to the right of that.

But I'm also tempted to try these a little more...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2-Car...Q5fAccessories
They're 13 LED, look 100% spot on like the AutoLumination bulbs, and it's free shipping included. Win-Win.

Marc,
I'm definitely interested. Let me know if you come up with a design. I hope you make them for E92/E93 LCI tail lights too

search for canbus here:

http://www.autolumination.com/otherleds.htm

there's a led tower that has a ba9s base which would fit the rear fogs, unfortunately i think the size is too large.

you're going to replace your rear foglights with LEDs? But it's already so bright, and you can't change the color temperature of it lol

Let us know how it goes though anyway

hey btw, the rear fogs are h21w in a ba9s base for my car, not sure what other models are.

I'll tinker with the bulbs to see what is best whether it be in the reverse lights or the rear fogs. I've got quite a while until these show up, so until then I've removed the diy hid fogs and gp angel eyes and will try and upgrade for a simpler, cleaner look overall.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like:

BA15S - diameter = 17mm
BA9S - diameter = 10.65mm

That 23 led one you pointed out looks great, but I think there should be an easier option then fanagling that bulb into the smaller ba9s socket. I could be wrong though as the LED bulb's base might be similar sizes before they enter the base sockets.

I'm really curious to see how easy it would be to remove the canbus circuit. alot of qs...
