Square or Staggered tires on 335xi?

I'm looking for performance summer tires for a 2008 335xi coupe. I don't have the sport package.

EDITED.....Ok, I've decided to go with a 235 square set-up.

Any opinion on 17" vs. 18"?
($985)
G-FX OR7 17x8.5 35mm-OS wheels &
Dunlop Direzza DZ101 235/45R17 tires
($1172)
Voxx Maglia 18x8.5 40mm-OS wheels &
Dunlop Direzza DZ101 234/40R18 tires
For the wheels, should I target the same 35mm offset as an 8.0" wheel to maximize bearing life or should i use a different offset for clearance? Is somewhere between 30mm and 40mm okay?

I'm looking for a tire that does okay in the rain that's soft (300 wear rating or less) to run in the summer. Any opinions on the Dunlop Direzza DZ101?

Use the calculator at the top of the wheel section, it is a great tool for what you want to do. The consensus on the forum is that as long as you keep the differential between the front and rear tire under 1% you can run a staggered set up on an xi. I'm still waiting for my wheels to arrive in the mail, but I went with a 18x8 /18x9.5 and it will be fine. With those dimensions on 225/40/18 and 255/35/18, the differential is .236 which is just as good as the factory pair they put on.

People have had success with all the staggered set ups you posted, but I'd rather do the 225/255 combo since that is what the factory offers. But that is just me.

A lot of AWD owners run square because they can rotate and they'll have the peace of mind knowing the rolling diameter is the same between the front and rear wheels.

Staggered wheels and tires can work just fine though. A 235/265 is what we get our customers set up with often.

So would a 235/275 setup for an e92 xi be out of the question?

Also, how is clearance on the same model with a 19x8.5 et 33 and 19x9.5 et30? 235/35 265/30

I assume fine but, what size spacer would I need to run flush with an H&R drop? I currently am running 10mm front and 20mm rear on stock setup.

A 275 rear is not out of the question. There are quite a few people here that run those sizes, since the rolling diameter is about the same.

The wheel specs look pretty good but with a 275 you may rub on bumps, especially when you're lowered. I would not use a spacer in your case.

For the 8.5" wheels, should I target the same 35mm offset as an 8.0" wheel to maximize bearing life or should i use a different offset for clearance? Is somewhere between 30mm and 40mm okay?
