Free airport long-stay parking (maybe)
At my local airport, long-stay park-and-ride is basically unmanned. You pay on-line, tell them your reg and when you turn up a camera reads your number-plate and lets you in. On the way out the same thing happens. If you have stayed to long you put in your credit-card to open the barrier.
The park-and-ride buses drive in and out all day because the camera recognizes their number-plates and opens the barriers. Is anyone thinking what I'm thinking? |

I have a feeling the camera will clock your plate regardless. Also, saying the those registration recognition systems do have a tendency to not recognise the square plates, or plates that aren't in the correct format/spacing/text. If you go to your local waste disposal centre they will clock your plate so you don't use it too often or if your plate is a trade vehicle. Down here the plates pop up on the screen as you drive in and the last few times I've been with one of our business vehicles it hasn't worked to the the strange plates.

Try it.
But If I was planning an ANPR system I'd be looking to silhouette the thing with the plate too. "That 3 series is sure one funny looking Enviromax 400" But who knows.

ps. A local town center carpark where I park from time to time has a chip coin system. The coin is magnetized when you stick in in the pay machine and that's how you get back out at the bottom of the ramp.
Only, its magnetized as soon as you put it in the machine, because there's only one place for it to drop out. And there's a cancel button on the machine. Saved me quite a few when I've left it there overnight for example *cough*

But why would they ever notice? They have a database of photos with thousands of cars and hundreds of buses. There is nothing to arouse any suspicions. My main concern is if they do rumble me there is a 50:50 chance they will have my car at the time.

I was going to say that actually - if they do sus it out your car may well be behind the barrier!

Yes, I'd have thought there was a transponder present.

They might but in my experience when you have a system in place which opens a barrier when it recognises a vehicle, it's a very hard sell to install a system which opens a barrier when it recognises a vehicle.

It's no different to the 'Tags' that open the barriers at the Dartford Tunnel. I have a 'Tag' that sits in the windscreen, when the car approaches the barrier, the barrier opens.

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. I know how transponders work. What I meant was, given they already have a system which works with buses and cars (the ANPR system) it isn't going to be easy to persuade whoever pays the bills to install a second system (transponders) which only works with buses.

I like my car too much to leave it in an airport park and ride. I'd rather pay the bucks and use a taxi or limo service.... |
