Help! Stripped valvetronic motor bolt

Hi,

I am trying to replace a leaking Valve Cover Gasket in a 2007 328i
(N51 engine). I have removed/loosened every bolt except for a
single e8 bolt holding the Valvetronic motor at the bottom. There is
very little clearance for an e8 socket to grab onto the bolt and I
managed to strip it and even with a new set of thin-walled e8 socket, I
couldn't remove it.

So, I drilled the bolt and tried to extract it with an extractor which
snapped while I was trying to rotate it anticlockwise.

Next, I tried a needlenose plier which didn't help.

I also tried cutting a slot in the bolt with needle files and didn't
make much headway.

I should also mention that I have tried spraying the bolt with PB
Blaster, tapped it with a hammer and tried to get it to turn by
hitting the side with a screwdriver and hammer. No dice.

A few things I can think of next is drilling from the back either
completely through or partway and then turn it clockwise somehow. I am
a bit nervous about this due to space being tight and the potential for
damaging the Valvetronic casing.

I am also wondering if there is a slot cutter that turns in line with
the shaft. Such a thing would make it possible to cut a slot in the
bolt.

Also is there is any magical ingredient I can apply to
the bolt which would help the socket grab onto it?

Would appreciate any tips on this.

Thanks

Did you use a swivel on the e8 socket with the wiring harness tabs pulled back for clearance? Thats the easiest way to get to it. Even add a wobble extension will help. All 1/4 inch drive only.

If that doesn't help

Before drilling it out, you COULD (cautiously) use jb weld onto the socket/bolt. Let it cure 24 hours then remove it. JB Weld would be your magical ingredient.

Do not get it anywhere but on the head of the bolt and in the socket. The socket will be trash.

Yes, I did use a swivel socket and all 1/4". I am definitely past the usual tricks.

Thanks for the JB weld suggestion. I just checked online and there seem to be different formulations. Is there one that you recommend?

I do not know, I'd check the bolt. Test if its aluminum or steel by using a magnet on it. Would that help in the decision?

the VVT motor bolts are all steel, even on the cars with a magnesium cover.

An update. I ended up buying the JB Weld original. Unfortunately, it didn't work. As I turned the socket, the weld failed.

I have ordered some oscillating tool blades and will attempt to cut a slot. Those bolts are steel and don't know if it will work. We'll see!

Every time I've had some torx bolt strip out I've just gone to one size smaller and tapped it onto the bolt. Unless the previous owner decided to torque that thing the same as a wheel bolt it shouldn't be too tight. If you can't get it out with a smaller torx size then try with wrenches the closed 12 point end tapping them in. If you want you can support the other side of the bolt as you hit the size of the head so you don't risk damaging anything and all the force is being directed into the bolts head. The way I've found to be the best for removing that one under the motor is a small 1/4 ratchet and lot of 1/4 in extensions until you get enough flex to fit the ratchet in while having the socket right and solid on the bolt head. Also I replaced all of mine recently as my old ones were getting a bit beat up, cheap from fcp euro.
