Fluid on Engine?
I just knoticed fluid on my engine block. Worried it was my head gasket, but it seems like it my be coming from the oil filter area. My hope is that it is an over torqued oil filter cap. Second guess is the oil filter housing gasket and last and most worrisome, blown head gasket. Here is a pic of the engine. Anyone have the same issue?

Yep. You can see the charge pipe on the bottom of the picture. I'll try to get a couple more pictures tomorrow.

So after doing some more exploring under the hood this morning, it appears that my oil filter housing is leaking. My dealer quoted $935 to replace the gaskets. Such BS! Around $800 just in labor. I can't believe this isn't something covered out of normal warranty since this is such a common issue witht these engines. I put an email into BMW of NA in hope of getting thus covered. It wouldn't be such a big deal if I hadn't just replaced the water pump and thermostat a couple months ago.

It’s definitely do-able yourself. Just did mine in about 3 hours, but broke engine cylinder coolant hose when removing it for more space, and my serpentine belt started squealing after the repair - probably from all the fluid I spilled on it. If you do it yourself definitely order the coolant hose replacement fitting because it will bust

Heaps of guides loaded with tips throughout this site.
- Coolant hose and fitting to cyl head. Plastic likely brittle and will shatter when disturbed. Hose likely swollen from oil contamination - Top radiator hose. Likely swollen from oil contamination and the plastic fitting may shatter when disturbed. Oring inside fitting may also be swollen. - Serpentine belt may be deteriorated from oil contamination. Check tensioner and idler pulleys for melted rubber. Remove belt prior to repair. - Intake manifold gaskets should be replaced when you elevate the manifold to do the repair. You do not have to remove the manifold completely. - Chargepipe may break when disturbed. Be gentle, dont forget the anchor bracket near the AC compressor when you try to move it - Make sure you have etorx sockets, torque wrench and the specs - Replace the oil cooler line orings (2x) - Recommend changing the oil after repair, before starting the engine as coolant can enter the oil passages when you remove the housing |
