Not sure if I understand your question. The snap-in adapter is only designed to charge the phone and connect it to the exterior antenna. You can pair the phone and use it without a cradle. Did this for over a year with the Motorola V3 before BMW offered the proper adapter.

There are two basic parts (not counting the trim piece): the adapter and the cradle. The adapter is phone unique and plugs into the cradle. You can take this out by pushing the button on the cradle and lifting the adapter from the back. You should have a plastic piece somewhere that lays in on top of the cradle to protect the connectors while the adapter is absent. With this piece in place you have a "pocket", just not the rubber tray that is normally there in cars without the cradle.

The phone will still connect via Bluetooth but you won't have connection to the external antenna nor will the phone battery get charged.
