I purchased my 335i back in September. Ever since the perches I've notice that the car takes a long time to warm up compared to other cars I've owned. Well here in the northeast the weather has turned colder, around 30F-40F. I was driving the other night and even after 15 minutes it wasn't at resting point.. Is that normal?

After 27 minutes it just at 210... Should I take it to the dealer? The car is inside also.. It's not like it's been outside all night.

I have similar experience, my engine temp stays at 70C (the lowest) for quite a long time, at least 15 mins, before moving, in contrast my old TSX would get to mid level of the engine temp in about 5 mins

I have the same situation with mine. I don't think it's a "problem" at all but it does take mine about 15 minutes to reach normal operating temperature after a cold start...even at highway speeds.

i didnt know TSX's had engine oil gauges...most likely just the coolant temp which gets up to normal temp in 5 min or less.

i'll bet that if you drove the car harder it would warm up faster.

I believe it's because it is an oil temp, not water temp gauge. It take a lot longer for the oil to fully wrm up. I wouldn't worry about it, just dont redline it untill you get up to 200 or so then let 'er rip.

Yes, that is normal. It takes a lot longer for the oil temp to increase to the normal range than it does for the water temp, which is what you are used to looking at.

You are also heating up quite a bit of oil... around 7 quarts. All BMWs have large oil capacities. My Maxima holds 4 quarts

turbo cars need a little more attention than NA engines, and I would take it easy until the OIL was warmed up before I drove with normal throttle.

Exactly. The gauge is for oil temp.

As far as interior heat goes, it comes up very, very fast. I haven't paid attention but there must be a warning light for high coolant temp.

rtfm, it will say, dontn idle the car to warm it up. Start her up, put your belt on, and drive away. But take it very easy if its extremely cold out. That will heat the car up more than idling, which creates very little heat. If its 10 degrees out, Ill let the car idle for a minute upon its first start of the day.

Based on the manual, technical info and experience:

Best recommendation looks like this:

1) Just let the car warm up until Idle stabilizes (335i is 600 RPM, Yes “600” not “6000”), this should be about +-1 minute

2) Do not let your car idle for more than 2-3 minutes, as it’s bad for your car and bad for the environment

3) Drive and use accelerator smoothly and keep the car under 4500RPM until your oil temp goes up a bit temps (at least 80ºC or somewhere around 140ºF)

4) After that, you can drive normally

5) Do not drive like a bat out of hell until the oil temp has reached optimal temps (110ºC or somewhere around 190ºF)

This should keep your little beast's engine and mechanicals safe and enjoyable for a long time.

So there you have it; take it or leave it

The heat in my car gets warm really quick, but the oil temp takes forever... by the time i get to work (20 minutes) its just up to the middle (210 F)... but i drive normally after about 5-7 minutes.

It definatly didnt take this long when it was warm out... its like 20 degrees out right now.

Does the intercooler have an effect on slowing the engine warm up? My buddies twin turbo RS4 takes forever to warm up also..

My 335 oil be taking forever man... shitty part of owning one I think. Like you said sometimes 15-mins has passed or 15 miles ..plenty heat/warm coolant.. and I'm still rocking like 170 or less. When I switched to Liquid moly oil it took less time..very noticeable. What does/did ur 335 get up to at its avg temp? Has/did urs every go warmer than usual.. The manual says 210 is optimal and also gives a range around 210... but my whip has like neverrrr gone higher than 220-225 which was literally once when my belt tensioner decided to require maintenance while owning a brand new m4 on this major curve in the freeway ..lol on I-94 ;(.. m4 boy had madddd straight away speed tho. He certainly drove right past me just after that corner.

Anyway, maybe you don't own it anymore.. or not around. I didn't see the date of ur message. However, if you, OR ANYONE, can let me know what ur avg oil temp e90/92 335i is. I don't mean those bad weeks/months when check engine light is Fcking with you either or emissions issues etc. But when you feel it is running really well. usually happens in 3-6 month intervals wit bimmer ;(.

Bmw emphasizes the urgent need to seek a professional when your oil temp climbs above that range even once. I cant remember what upp the high end was... I think optimal range is 200-230. My beast won't touch 230 unless something catastrophic goes down. Is this true for others?? I know issues and climate will skew the avg a bit but again when u feel ur car is running well...whats the normal oil temp. 230 is high affff to me but u?
