Just got back from taking the girlfriend to Santa Rosa Beach, FL with mine. Loaded up the yeti, folding chairs, beach shelter, all of her shit and got 28.7 mpg on the ride down in comfort.
I really wish wagons were a thing here like in Europe. They really do 80% of what most people need. And I use it to take my bike to the racetrack. Tow the bike behind with a fuel bottle and load up the car with my entire paddock. Luggage, race gear, tools, shelter, chairs, cooler, fans, genny, etc. Im about to pull the trigger on the Yakima Slimshady and a roof box. |

But regardless, a great alternative to an SUV if you need more space than a sedan. I just saw a post for a 30d touring in Europe. Sucks wagons aren't more popular here in USA. |

I average 27-28 with a fully functioning xdrive.
my in town/interstate usage is probably 70/30 and I'm still averaging 22 for the last year. 20 would be unacceptable. especially for an highway number. |

Yeah something is up. I got that number not from the computer but from doing the math when I refilled. My computer sits at about 26mpg average but more like 70% highway. I should qualify that my 28 was staying within 10 over due to active police and NOT towing. Just us two and some luggage.
As far as the towing rig I have a Kendon fold-up SLR trailer, its got its own suspension and runs on real wheels: https://www.kendonusa.com/collection...cycle-trailers And an Execuhitch/Invisihitch. Made in GA, the frame replaces the bumper and when you remove the gooseneck its completely invisible. Full 2" ball, with it car is rated for 250/2500. Their kit came with the wiring harness. taps into the rear lights and has its own controller so it doesnt piss off the light monitoring system: http://execuhitch.com/tow-hitches/bm...ler-hitch.html With: Without: Tons of shit: Complete rig: Car barely knows its back there. No bouncing, no real noise outside of an occasional click from the ball over a big bump. Gas mileage at 80 drops maybe 10-15%. |

All makes sense, what Ryan says, given how these cars are used in the rest of the civilized (non-US, "must have SUV for towing", world).
I will also say that my computer pretty much sits at 22mpg for average mileage. I'd say that about 75% of my driving is more city than highway. I think that the only way to get accurate mpg info from these cars is old school mileage/gassing up logs. The computer is kind of nonsense as far as that's concerned. |

I have found the computer to be quite accurate as long as your tire size is correct.
very rarely is it more than a half MPG different than a hand calc, and i'd say that error is probably on the hand calc side of things. the DME knows exactly how much fuel it's injecting in the engine. |

Florida is flat and sea level for most part unless you are on a bridge or causeway.

Our 6mt xdrive easily got 30mpg on the highway. Best ever was 35mpg driving through the BC interior (about 500 miles on a tank). I suspect the auto does a lot worse.
Wish we still had it. The X5 is such a pile of junk. |

The auto has a better gear ratio than the manual so highway driving should do better.

No it doesn't. The final drive is shorter, so even if the overdrive gear is taller, it negates any potential. Auto e90s consistently put down less power and get worse mileage than manuals. It it what it is.
