Anyone know what's considered 'totaled' after an accident?

I drive a 2008 328i and someone cut in front of me and I slammed right into him. Front bumpers pretty messed up but I'm not sure about the frame. Front windshield cracked, driver side window shattered and both air bags popped. Any opinions? Or comments?

Totaled is when the estimated cost of the repair is valued more then the value of the vehicle.

Was just wondering if the damage I mentioned would be enough to be considered totaled but I'm guessing it won't since it's not too much damage? I just fear if they it's not totaled, I might have electrical problems and such.

As a general rule of thumb (and there are tons of variables) most insurance companies will consider a car totaled when the expected cost of the repairs exceed about 75% of the value of the car.

Hard to say without someone inspecting the frame 'n sich. Your drivers side window shattered though, which could have been a result of air bag deployment pressure change or strong enough shock traveling through the A-pillar and door frame, or a combination of both. The collison speed would be a potential factor in how much actual damage exists that isn't currently visible, but it adds up quick.

OP, is your windshield broke as a result of the accident, then its quite possible it'll have some sort of frame damage. It is possible that based off of the described damage that it may be a write off.

Your description of the accident is as helpful to us as well.... nothing. Take pictures, a lot of them if you want any legit answer. If not wait for your insurance adjuster to tell you....

Just don't understand how anyone with half a brain goes to the 'internet' and said what you said in the title thread and then described the damn damage instead of tons of pictures. Sheeesh. You're making us strangers on the internet mad!! lol.

Haha my apologies. I've been stuck working 12 hour shifts and have nothing but my iPad. I will certainly try to upload pictures tonight, if I can. Thanks for all the feedback though. I appreciate it!

It depends a bit on the insurance company, but a lot of them total once repair costs exceed 80% of total vehicle value. With both airbags deployed, it is probably totalled based on average value of a 4 year old 328 and it probably isn't something you want to own if they try to fix it!

From what you are stating the damage doesn't sound that bad. The insurance isn't going to total the vehicle for this. The repair costs on this should be on average anyway from $4500-$6500. Depending on where the adjuster gets his prices from. But doesn't sound like any frame damage but wouldn't be able to tell you without pics.

I hit a deer with my '08 STI and it had less damage than what the OP described. The total to repair was almost $10,000 and I did not have any airbags deploy. I doubt he is (well, his insurer) going to get off that cheaply.

I specialize in european car repairs. Mechanical, Body, Etc..I myself am repairing my 335i right now. Total cost of repair is around $15k for me. But being your vehicle was an STI(boosted more than likely) and you hit a deer, they probably figured undercarriage damage, plus the front end work..and the subframes alone are around 2k for those vehicles. But it depends on the insuring agency. And without pics this is the best description I could give the OP with my previous statement. The airbags and dash will be total cost $2500 needing he not replace seat belts or pre-tensioners. Door glass and windshield total will be $1100 max. Depending on what he need for the front of the vehicle is where the rest of money will go. Those stated prices are parts only. It would be avg 15 hrs labor for R&I of dash and airbags and 4 hrs labor for R&I of glasses. Without pics I can't tell labor or close estimate cost of the things to be fixed on front end of vehicle.

Here are some pictures. Sorry for the delay guys. Finally got to a computer. My girlfriend didn't really get good pics of the left side but all I know is the driver window shattered.

i think GAP is when you total your car and still have balance with bank, GAP covers that balance. is that what you are asking ? buy car for 50k, crash it few month later, insurance gives you 45k, GAP pays remaining 5k

Nope. Broken windows don't necessarily mean frame damage. It can be after shock from vehicle being hit, And windshield broke due to impact from dash airbag deploying. And now that there are pics up I can say that this isn't too bad. Things that I can tell off top of my head that needs to be replaced are the front bumper cover, fog lamps, all grills, possibly both headlights(broken tabs more then likely), radiator/core support, bumper absorber, bumper reinforcement, both fenders, both crash sensors(can be viewed attached to frame right behind headlamp on outer panel). Hood can be repaired. So total on exterior parts should run $3700. Airbags/dash $2500. Glasses $ 800. Total labor for everything should be 28-31 labor hours @ $80 p/h. Grand total should be 9480. Still not enough to total the vehicle. (prices stated may vary depending on where body shop get the parts from.)
